Winscombe beat Nailsea & Backwell in their latest league match of the season.

Nailsea & Backwell 8 pts

Winscombe 15 pts

NAILSEA immediately got into their stride and had Winscombe on the retreat for the first 15 minutes, at the end of which they were fortunate that the score remained at 0-0.

Winscombe had the advantage at the set pieces, but Nailsea controlled the ball well in the loose and their kicking policy paid dividends. Having ridden the storm, Winscombe settled into a better pattern and might have scored three times in as many minutes.

Will Thomas sent Stuart Warren on a surging run, but his pass was dropped with the defence wide open, before good play by James Flower and Thomas was wasted. Finally, Owen Howell made a break and offloaded but an overlap was wasted.

Eventually the pressure told when a series of three scrums ended with a strike against the head and Tom Nock and Lewis sent Thomas under the posts for a try converted by Owen Howell.

With Greg Brown being troublesome, Nailsea were unable to take any line-out ball and could not sustain any pressure. From another stolen throw, Flower was put through the midfield and Winscombe were awarded a penalty at the breakdown. Howell took the three points on offer.

Winscombe made a positive start to the second half. The ball was sent along the threequarter line and Humphrey was forced into touch five metres out. Brown stole the throw-in and Winscombe were awarded a penalty at the ruck. They elected to take a scrum from which Thomas scored a pushover try.

Nailsea replied with a penalty and Winscombe were disadvantaged in the final quarter when Nailsea requested to have uncontested scrummages. With four minutes remaining, Nailsea got a turnover and their winger ran in from 50 metres for the final score.
