FOUR Weston College students have been selected for the South West Colleges rugby squad.

FOUR Weston College students have been selected for the South West Colleges rugby squad.

Dan Lomax (16), Sam Fisher (16), Lewis Hancock (17), who all previously attended Worle School and George Kimmins (17), formerly from Kings of Wessex, have all been selected for the South West squad in a bid to become part of the national team.

All four students live in Weston and are studying the Extended Diploma in Sport at the College.

This achievement is the first part of the England Colleges trials process, which is the highest honour a college rugby player can achieve outside of the full England set up.

The players will play in two regional games against two of the other three regions (Midlands, North, South and East). Forty players will then be selected for a training weekend before a final 23-man England squad will be picked.

This follows on from Weston College’s success of having one male and two female players play for England Colleges’ side last season.

George who is Weston College 1st XV captain said: “It is fantastic to be selected for the South West, but the real hard work starts now. All four of us have real aspirations to play for England Colleges and we are going to continue to work hard both on and off the field to try and achieve our aims.”

Phil Llewellyn, director of rugby at Weston College is delighted with this success, he said: “This is a great achievement for the players and for the academy as a whole. This is a great reward for all the players’ hard work and commitment.”

The South West trials took place at Bridgwater Rugby Club. The regional matches will take place at Warwick University in Coventry.

The regional matches will take place on November 14 and December 5.
