Hornets 5 pts Torquay Athletic 11 ptsON a day when the atrocious conditions caused many enforced errors and made it extremely difficult for either side to play rugby, Hornets lost a game they needed to win.An uneventful first half, which was dominated by the conditions, ended scoreless and with the teams virtually undistinguishable because of the mud on their shirts. After the break, Torquay quickly went ahead with a penalty by Jones when Hornets were caught offside at the breakdown after 42 minutes. Shortly after that Hornets' Martin Powell was yellow carded for what appeared to be a minor offence in the ruck. Torquay took full advantage of the extra man and went straight on the offensive, but a disputed try, given by the referee despite his touch judge informing him the ball had not been grounded, took Torquay into an 8-0 lead after 55 minutes.Hornets battled their way back into contention and from a line-out catch and drive the rolling maul saw Ryan Hedges go over for an unconverted try to make it 8-5 after 60 minutes. But handling errors due to the conditions that continually frustrated both sides as the game went into the last quarter. The only other score in the game being a penalty for an infringement at the breakdown which Torquay's Jones put over to bring the final score to 11-5. Tomorrow (Sat), Hornets travel to St Mary's in a game they must win if they are to move away from the bottom of the table.
