North Somerset youngsters Katie Reynolds (Weston) and Florence Long (Winscombe) won silver medals for South Gloucestershire & Stroud College at the Association of Colleges National Championships in Nottingham.

SGS had won the regional final at Weston at the end of 2018 and defeated Loughborough College 31-24 in their first match of the tournament.

Further wins followed on day two against representatives from South East (17-10), North West (35-17), Yorkshire & Humberside (29-12) and Eastern (38-5).

But a 22-14 loss to a strong Wales team on the final day proved decisive, despite a closing 28-7 win over West Midlands, as they missed out on gold on the head-to-head.

A spokesperson said: “The team performance on and off the pitch was a credit to their college and the South West. It was an amazing end to another fantastic season.”
