WESTON Colts saved their best performance of the season for this National Cup last 32 tie against Newbury.

They beat a side that had only lost once this year with a tremendous second half defensive performance in which all the players excelled.

In what was captain Justin Beardon's last game for the colts before going to New Zealand to play, Weston produced an heroic performance.

Centre Nick Manning put the home side ahead with a penalty before fly-half Ben Irons dummied and went to put the home side further ahead.

In a war of attrition, Newbury fell into the hands of the home side and when right wing Dan Prime kicked on from a Newbury break down to gather and score and then convert, it was up to the visitors to respond.

Despite a monopoly of possession in the second half, the visitors never really looked like breaching the home line and the score at the end reflected Weston's outstanding defence.

They must now meet old rivals Hornets in the last 16.
