HORNETTES ladies rugby team’s winning streak came to an end on Sunday when they entertained Trowbridge Muddy Maidens in a league game at the Nest.
In the hardest game of the season so far Hornettes put out a full squad of 20 to Trowbridge’s 15.
From the whistle, both teams were determined not to give anything. Gradually Hornettes managed to move their way towards the visitors 22 with some good interaction with forwards and backs.
Trowbridge then made their way to the Hornettes’ 22 and five minutes from half-time, Trowbridge managed to break through the defence to score an unconverted try.
At the break it was 5-0 to the visitors. Hornettes made a change with Claire Hixson replacing hooker Julie Hill. Hornettes started the second half well and put the pressure on Trowbridge and within 10 minutes found themselves five metres out.
Backs and forwards worked hard to keep the ball and No.8 Keri Kennedy appeared to score, but unfortunately the referee was unsighted and awarded a penalty. Laura Clarke found herself diving over to the right of the posts for Hornettes’ only try. Sara Curtis converted.
The score was 7-5 to Hornettes which made Trowbridge come back even harder. Hornettes kept working hard and trying to make breaks only to be snuffed out by the visitors. Trowbridge were as determined and eventually crossed the line under the posts which was converted.
The final score was 12-7 to Trowbridge. A hard fought game and the Hornettes did themselves proud. Back of the match was Kim Hixson and the forward of the match was Zoe Fisher
Hornettes’ next game is on Sunday away at Cullompton. The next home game is on February 6 against Old Reds.
