Weston Ladies 2nd XI 2

Burnham 2

WESTON Seconds played host to third in the table, Burnham, and were fighting to avoid the dreaded relegation zone.

A sluggish start by the home side saw breakdown in play as Weston struggled to string any passes together. Burnham outclassed their hosts and within 15 minutes the visitors led 2-0.

Despite the deficit, Weston kept their heads up and fought on and their efforts were eventually rewarded when a superb run and cross by Rachel Aldington was converted by Sadie Sjogren to make the score 2-1 at the interval.

A half-time pep talk kept the girls focussed and the second half kicked off with equal possession. Weston battled on with consistent play from player of the match Kirsten Warden and outstanding commitment from Emma Whitehead in the midfield.

Weston got their much-deserved equaliser five minutes from full time when Sjogren swept home another goal from the back post.

A fantastic result for Weston moves them into seventh position and out of the drop zone. Weston face top of the table, Taunton Vale 4, this Saturday so the battle to secure their place in the second division continues.

Winscombe 2nds 2

Bridgwater 2nds 2

AFTER last week’s impressive win, Winscombe were looking to continue their good form in this derby.

Both teams made a strong start and play was evenly distributed, but going into the break, Winscombe found themselves 2-0 down despite some strong defending from Amelia Bourton, Jo Hann and Lucy James.

Both teams came out strong in the second half and Winscombe upped their game with good performances from Laura Harvey and Hannah Folkes in midfield.

A mistake from Bridgwater saw Trudie Lynham make a speedy break in to their attacking half, who found Vicki Pagett to send the ball home for 2-1. Following an incident that saw Bridgwater go down to 10 players, Winscombe finished an impressive fight back with a well-deserved goal for Lynham. Player of the match was Laura Harvey.

Winscombe 2nds 3

Taunton Civil Service 3

WINSCOMBE went into this game feeling confident, only to be brought back down to earth by an impressively quick Civil Service forward line and three early goals.

Following some half-time pitch side animosity, Winscombe were more determined than ever to get back in to the game and the back line of Fran Brown, Jo Hann, Claire Lee and Amelia Bourton worked tirelessly.

The whole team pulled together and after a well-worked short corner was converted by Lynham, confidence was slowly coming back. Gail Izzard and Nicky Mills worked hard in midfield and it was Izzard who made it 3-2.

With 10 minutes to go, and with a final effort from the Winscombe team, they got the draw from an impressively taken goal from Lynham, who beat the keeper from a tight angle. Player of the match was Claire Lee.
