Saileyboy Price won the final of the Box Cup held in Redditch.

WESTON Boxing Club’s season came to an end with a trip to Redditch with Saileyboy Price in the final of the Box Cup Class A 50-52kg.

His opponent, Daniel Burridge, travelled from High Wycombe and as the two 15-year-olds squared up, Burridge was the stronger looking boxer.

As the first bell went, both boxers started cautiously, trying to pick each other off, but it was the quick feet and fast hands that saw Saileyboy start to take control of the contest.

The second round saw Burridge become less cautious, but his attacking style only advanced Saileyboy’s lead, as he countered Burridge each time he ploughed in. Saileyboy was in control and had one more round to go to become champion and wanted to show he was worthy of it. In the third round, he stood toe to toe with Burridge, showing how strong he was and his hand was raised as the unanimous winner and Redditch Box Cup champion.

In a successful season for the club, Esme Taylor (13) and Merlene George (17) reached national female finals, Liam Hunt (26) won the Redditch Box Cup senior middleweight gold medal and Western Counties title.

Ollie Giddings (19) became the Somerset & Bristol senior light welterweight champion and Saileyboy Price (15) was the Redditch Box Cup schools gold medallist, as well as a successful debut season for Wesley Williams (11), Terry Price (12), Wallace Attwell (13) and Coral Forde (18).

The club is looking forward to next season which starts in October. The club is always looking to add to its already bustling gym. Training is at Weston Youth Centre, Coleridge Road, Weston, on Tuesday and Sunday evenings from 7pm throughout the summer.
