St Johns Reserves closed the gap to one point at the top of the Weston & District League after beating leaders Nailsea United.

Nailsea Utd Res 1

St Johns Res 3

SAINTS went into this top of the table clash knowing that three points would close the gap on Nailsea to one point with two games in hand.

Saints started well and Troy Hayes scored with his first touch, calmly lobbing the Nailsea keeper. Saints should have doubled their lead after outstanding work from Troy Hayes gave Ryan Charalambous the chance for a simple tap-in, but he put the ball over the bar.

The Saints defence was well marshalled by skipper Neil Hartley, who along with Mitchell Winter and Joe Whittaker, were having an easy afternoon. The midfield of Andy Hayes and Lee Whittaker were on top, aided by Charalambous and Vinny on the wings.

Saints doubled their lead when a Dan Hartley strike was deflected into the Nailsea net. Hartley was unlucky moments later when a free kick hit the post.

After the break, Nailsea scored when a free kick was headed home. With Andy Hayes pulling all the strings, Saints wrapped up the points with minutes remaining when Charalambous netted.

Mike Whittaker’s Building Contractors man of the match was shared between Troy and Andy Hayes.

Kewstoke Lions Res 3

Sporting Weston 4

KEWSTOKE Lions Reserves hosted high-flying Sporting Weston in this Division 4 match.

Struggling for fit and available players, Kewstoke had to start the match with 10 players and were soon a goal behind. Once back to full strength, the Lions competed well and fought back with a goal from Adam Miller. Sporting then came back, scoring and missing a penalty to lead 2-1 at half-time.

The second half started with Kewstoke drawing level through the lively Dave Reynolds, before taking the lead from an Adam Crawford penalty.

As Kewstoke tired, Sporting were awarded a penalty for handball which they converted, before in the final few minutes sub Matt Bazell, was put clean through on goal to fire the winner for a relieved Sporting side.

Congresbury A 0

Shipham Res 2

SHIPHAM, buoyed by two recent wins after a dismal start to the campaign, came into this fixture with plenty of confidence.

Bobby Dugmore was played through, only to see his shot brilliantly saved by the Congresbury goalkeeper. Shipham took the lead when Dugmore flicked a great header over the keeper following a move started by Paul Stead assisted by Seb Winter.

Keeper George Stone was dominant in the air and after a fine through ball from Dugmore, Winter beat the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 2-0 at half-time.

After the break, Shipham thought they had scored again when a Stead cutback was hammered home by Lee Stacey, but the ball was deemed to have been out of play.

Man of the match was Bobby Dugmore. Manager Joe Rowsell also picked up the manager of the month award.

Priory Rangers 4

Clevedon Utd 2

PRIORY racked up their third straight Division 6 win with a hard-fought victory over Clevedon United.

A tense first half finished goalless, despite Mike Amey hitting the bar. That turned out to be Priory’s only real chance of the half with defences coming out on top, and Priory’s back four of Ben Holbrook, Andy Wingrove, Mike Amey and Mark Pearson along with keeper Chris Mullins looking assured.

Priory soon took the lead in the second half when Amey fired home after a goalmouth scramble. They doubled their lead soon after when Jordan Elliott was fouled in the box, Mat Keedwell scoring from the penalty.

Clevedon pulled one back midway through the half before Keedwell netted the third. The same player then turned provider to allow Ryan Gibbs to score his first goal for the club and seal the win for Priory. Clevedon scored a consolation late on.

Parish Pump man of the match was Mat Keedwell.
