BACKWELL Swimming Club started their 2010 Cotswold League campaign with an excellent win in this round one gala at Wellington.

This is the club's fourth year in the league, which is swum over four galas amongst 20 clubs from Somerset and Gloucestershire.

In 2009, Backwell won the B Gala and head coach Andy Daniel has this year set his squad's sights on getting to the A final.

Backwell led the gala from the early stages and went on to achieve 26 first places from the 52 races and the swimmers achieved an impressive 16 PBs.

The 11-year-old girls (Maddie Follett, Abby Harris, Charlie Wring, Ciara Halpin) and 11-year-old boys (Rahul Magudia, Tristan Slade, Kier Hart, Josh Griffiths) won both their relays, but the highlight amongst many excellent swims was club vice-captain Sam Hood breaking the club's 100m backstroke record that had stood for 15 years.

Final points: Backwell 167, Brockworth 119, Burnham 115, Dursley 112.
