OXFORD CITY 2

For the second successive Vanarama National South League game, Weston scored five goals, this time to beat fifth-placed Oxford City.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men after 25 minutes, but by that time Weston were 2-0 in front, and could have had at least three more.

On a cold night with a gale-force wind blowing the length of the Woodspring Stadium pitch, City forced an early corner, but the Seagulls opened their account on 10 minutes when Tristan Plummer slid man-of-the-match Joe McClennan’s pass beyond City keeper Laurie Walker from close range.

In other attacks, Scott Wilkson fired narrowly across goal and twice Dayle Grubb fired narrowly wide from good positions.

Scott Wilson hit the base of a post on 18 minutes, but seconds later Ben Withey doubled the score with a stunning effort from 35 yards that beat Walker all ends up to put the Seagulls firmly in charge.

As Weston forced successive corners, City’s David King was shown a second yellow card on 25 minutes for a foul and the home side struck again on 32 minutes when Wilson dispossessed Walker, who was slow to clear, and turned the ball into the empty net.

In later attacks, Grubb had a strong effort beaten out and Plummer forced a good save from Walker.

To their credit, City kept going and skipper Jose Lapoujade, one of five Spaniards in the squad, pulled a goal back on 44 minutes in a scramble from a corner.

For the second half, City brought on two substitutes and held out until the 68th minute when Wilson grabbed his second from another McClennan cross.

To their credit, City kept going and scored again on 72 minutes when Matty Whichelow beat Luke Purnell with a fine distance effort.

With his first touch after replacing Plummer, Syd Camper completed Weston’s scoring on 77 minutes, when put through by Withey.

The win lifts Weston up to 16th in the table, overtaking local rivals Bath City with a game in hand.
