WESTON will look to get over a tough week of league action when they battle for a place in the first round of the FA Cup this weekend.

The Seagulls will face Oxford City in the final qualifying round after losing 4-1 to Blue Square South leaders Woking on Monday night, and having let a two-goal lead slip against Eastbourne Borough on Saturday.

But boss Craig Laird says he has no new injuries to contend with and that his team are raring to go, with the prospect of a meeting with league opposition in the next round to spur them on.

Crowd favourite Sahr Kabba started his first match of the season up front for the Seagulls against Eastbourne on Saturday, and he repaid his manager’s faith with two goals in the first 13 minutes, first beating keeper Rikki Banks from six yards and then bundling the ball into the net after a goalmouth tussle.

The away team found a goal in the 39th minute when Simon Johnson’s 30-yard free-kick left Lloyd Irish standing still, and equalised after the break through skipper Gary Elphick’s header.

Kabba won Weston a penalty which Nat Pepperell scored to restore the home side’s lead, but Eastbourne nicked a deserved point through Carl Rook’s late header.

Weston then lost for the first time in five matches when they faced league leaders Woking in pouring rain at the Kingfield Stadium

Although Weston stood firm for most of the first half, they conceded just before half time when Brett Trowbridge brought down Moses Ademola in the box, and Jack King beat Irish from the spot.

The home team’s class showed in the second half as former Leicester City striker Elvis Hammond, Ademola and then substitute Giuseppe Sole gave them a 4-0 lead by the 80th minute.

Although the lively Kabba was adjudged to have been brought down in the box by home keeper Adam Howe, Pepperell’s 90th minute penalty proved to be a mere consolation for the Seagulls.

Weston slipped to 11th place after Monday’s defeat, but Craig said: “The point against Eastbourne was a good one in the end, as they are a full-time team who were relegated from the Blue Square Premier last season and are desperate to go back up.

“Woking are a very good team, as proven by their position at the top of the table, and we did well for most of the first half before they turned on their class. I am pleased though that we have managed to get through a tough week without any new injuries and I’ll have a full squad to pick from on Saturday.”

Craig watched Saturday’s opponents lose 1-0 to Weymouth in the Southern Premier Division on Tuesday night, and said: “They were resting some players for the match, and come Saturday both of us will be wanting to go through and hopefully get a tie against league opposition to really test ourselves.

“The lads are raring to go and I’m sure that we will give all that we’ve got to get into the first round come Saturday.”
