WESTON boss Craig Laird is refusing to press the panic button after a poor start to the season left the Seagulls propping up the Blue Square South table.

After three losses and a draw, Weston sit at the bottom of the table and Laird has identified his side’s difficulties in front of goal as the team’s Achilles heal.

Weston’s first match of their bank holiday schedule was away at Eastleigh, but the Seagulls’ dismal display saw them crash 3-0 at the Silverlake Stadium.

They had no answer to the speed of Eastleigh’s attacks, and the home side took the lead on 26 minutes through Moses Ademola’s lob.

He doubled his and his side’s tally a minute into the second half when Marvin Williams’ low effort was parried by Weston goalkeeper Lloyd Irish, with Ademola on hand to tap in the rebound. And to compound Weston’s misery, Eastleigh scored again straight from kick-off.

Regaining possession straight after the restart, Daryl McMahon’s effort was again parried by Irish to Ademola, who crossed for Craig McAllister to tap in.

Ashley Kington’s 30-yarder was the best effort from the Seagulls, and the home side could have doubled their goal tally with their superiority.

On Bank Holiday Monday Weston suffered their third successive defeat, this time at home to Cornish side Truro City.

Despite a better performance, Weston’s fragile defence let them down, while at the other end they could muster only one meaningful effort on goal – Chas Hemmings drawing a good save from away keeper Tim Sandercombe.

The visitors took the lead on 30 minutes when player-manager Lee Hodges’ long-range free-kick found the head of Kiefer Moore who beat Irish from six yards.

Despite Hemmings having a goal ruled out for offside, the away side doubled their advantage on 67 minutes when Les Afful burst down the left flank and crossed for Stewart Yetton to score.

After two matches in which his side failed to score, Laird admitted his side would have to take their chances in front of goal if they were to challenge at the right end of the table this season.

He said: “We were really disappointing against Eastleigh, but other than that we haven’t played too badly.

“We’re just not taking our chances. It’s not just the strikers but everyone, and someone needs to stand up and take the responsibility of knocking a few in.”

Despite his side’s profligacy Laird said he was not tempted to dip into the transfer market and was confident his current players would come good.

He continued: “We’re not panicking. Ten matches will be a better indication of where we are, but we just need to be sharper and results will come our way.”

Coach Rob Boyd has joined the club following assistant Jon Haile’s departure to Bristol City.

The former Bristol Rovers and Bath City player joins the Seagulls’ backroom staff from Shepton Mallet.

The Seagulls will travel to AFC Hornchurch on Saturday, before welcoming Staines Town to the Woodspring Stadium on Tuesday at 7.45pm.
