WESTON suffered defeat at the hands of the old enemy, Cheltenham, in the Bristol & West Water Polo League Division 2 game played at Hutton Moor. The visitors team contained two present England squad players and two former England squad members, so the Seasiders were always going to face an uphill battle.Sean Coles opened the scoring for Weston after two minutes of the opening quarter, but one of Cheltenham's internationals, Joel Thomas, got an equaliser, and then put the visitors ahead with a second goal a minute later.Cheltenham's Tom Dorman extended this lead before Weston's captain pulled it back to 3-2 shortly before the end of the quarter.Cheltenham continued to dominate in the second quarter after former international player Dave Evans netted for the visitors, with Sean Coles pulling one back for the Seasiders, only to see Evans net twice to extend their lead to 7-2.Two goals by Sean Coles and Stuart Fennell saw Weston pull the score back to 7-4, only to see another of the national squad players, Adam Legge score to take it to 8-4 shortly before the half time break.Weston looked towards veteran Martin Maloney to try and pull it around in the third quarter, after he took over the goal-keeping duties from youngster Justin Beardon, and after Sean Coles netted his third goal, but it was not to be as the Cheltenham side netted a further three goals, two for Thomas and one for Dave Cummings, before Weston's Alan Cummings finally found the back of the net just before the end of the quarter, leaving Weston trailing by five goals.Going into the final quarter, Cheltenham continued to be on top, scoring twice more before Sean Coles struck again for the Seasiders. Paul Watkins scored to make it 13-8, and it was left to Sean Coles to complete the scorecard for Weston with the final goal of the game, to give the final score of 13-9.Weston team and scorers: Justin Beardon (first half keeper); Martin Maloney (second half keeper); Paul Watkins (1), Sean Williamson, Greg Harper (1), Andy Simmonds, Alan Cummings (1), Mark Cummings, Liam Coles, Sean Coles (5), Nick Edwards, Stuart Fennell (1).Weston Water Polo Squad had a prizegiving at their headquarters, the Ebdon Arms at Wick St Lawrence, over the weekend. The players made a special presentation of an engraved tankard to their chief water polo coach and present chairman of Weston Swimming Club, Mike Coles; Paul Watkins was presented with Jack Hobbs Rose Bowl for the most improved player; Stuart Fennell received the Cherub Statuette for most appreciated player; captain Greg Harper received the Player's Player Award; and Martin Maloney got Clubman of the Year award. The team's sponsors, Steve and Rose of The Ebdon Arms, again provided refreshments both after the match and for the prize giving evening.Weston Water Polo squads train on Thursdays (9pm) and Sundays (6pm), and will always welcome new members.
