Weston 2nd returned empty-handed after suffering defeat at Ashcott & Shapwick.

WESTON 2nd XI made the short journey to Ashcott & Shapwick and came away empty handed after a poor batting display led to an emphatic seven wicket defeat.

After losing the toss, Weston were asked to bat first. A solid enough opening through Tom Ford (12), Mitch Smit and Jason Neave led Weston to 65-2.

However, once Smit was run out for 18 it was left to Neave to play a lone hand through the middle overs as a succession of batsmen came and went, with support only coming from Jalal Ahmed (11).

Neave attempted one big hit too many and was caught for 31 and the Weston innings was soon in tatters at 118-9. A last wicket stand of 38 between Alex Penwill (23 not out) and Ben Curley (3 not out) regained some credibility, but 146-9 never looked to be enough runs.

In reply, Weston got off to a good start with Tom Court (6-0-26-2) removing Gavin Patey, but the innings was steadied by Edmunds and Rudge.

Ashcott were comfortably in the driving seat and despite the best efforts of Curley (8-3-17-1) and Ahmed (9-1-29-0), Rudge (65) and Sam Patey (38 not out) saw the home side to victory with more than 13 overs remaining.

Intouch CRM man of the match was to Ben Curley.

Weston 3rd XI faced Cheddar 2nds in an exciting game and came away with a first victory of the season.

Stand-in skipper Tom Dancey asked Cheddar to bat first and opened up with Justin Turner (9-1-43-3) in his first game of the season, accounting for three of the Cheddar top four.

Turner was well supported by opening partner Dale Chard (12-1-44-2) and Simon Biddle (4-0-28-1) and at 89-6, Cheddar were in trouble, but Steve Russett came to the crease and bludgeoned a quickfire 58 and with support from visiting captain Richard Kent (21).

Dancey (4.1-0-16-3) removed the dangerous Russett on his way to taking a hat-trick and wrap up the innings on 166.

After tea, Weston started their innings with Dancey and Mark Bissex opening the batting and at drinks Weston were cruising on 124-0.

Then came the dreaded Falcons collapse with Dancey (61) and Bissex (43) dismissed and no other batsman made double figures apart from Ben Dancey (16). A brilliant catch on the boundary removed Ben Dancey and it was left to new signing Brueford to safely see the Falcons home.

Pick of the Cheddar bowlers was James Houghton who returned excellent figures of 6-0-14-4.

InTouch CRM man of the match went to Tom Dancey.

The 4th XI finally got their league campaign under way against visitors Huntspill & District 2nds at Clarence Park.

Huntspill batted first and raced away to 35 off the first six overs before Lawrence removed Smith, sharply caught by John Mayo at gully. Paul Skinner then trapped Cavill leg before and managed to slow the scoring down.

Youngsters Declan McNulty and Matt Knight took over the bowling and both bowled well, with McNulty taking two wickets and only going for six runs off his six overs as Huntspill reach 136.

In reply, Lawrence was removed in the second over and Wiseman went a couple of overs later. John and Dom Mayo steadied things somewhat before Dom departed. A collapse then ensued leaving Weston 54-7.

Horler and Hallam brought a bit of excitement by taking the score to 90, but when both fell to Shillaker, the writing was on the wall and Eaglets finished on 97 all out.

InTouch CRM man of the match was Matt Knight.
