Shipham took a changed side to meet Winscombe in the Challenge Cup and were well beaten 7-2.

Winscombe A 7

Shipham 2

SHIPHAM took an unfamiliar team to Winscombe in the cup and unfortunately it showed.

Winscombe took the lead early on when a through ball found the striker in space and he slotted home. They extended their lead shortly after when a long-range shot went through a crowd of players, leaving keeper Hughes unsighted.

Shipham scored when Paul Stead did well and knocked it back to player-manager Joe Rowsell, who curled a shot into the far top corner. Winscombe then took control of the game, scoring three goals in the last 10 minutes of the half.

Shipham continued to work hard and the introduction of Matty Hollow at half-time provided them with more of an attacking impetus. The game became stretched and Shipham’s defence faced wave after wave of Winscombe attacks, but the defence was excellent.

It was inevitable that Winscombe would add to their goal tally, which they did twice, either side of a cool Matty Hollow finish from a Jamie White through ball.

Man of the match was shared between Ben Hollow and Liam Ryan.

AFC Nailsea 2

Worle Rangers 2

(Worle won 3-0 on pens)

RANGERS’ collective spirit and class at vital times saw them past a strong Nailsea side in the first round of the Challenge Cup.

After 11 weeks without a competitive game, Rangers started brightly, with Les Quick pulling the strings in midfield and Craig, Owen, Whiddington and Randall looking dangerous in forward areas.

The deadlock was broken as Randall latched onto a superb Shane Quick free-kick to calmly slot home. Worle doubled their lead when Brinson hit the bar with a thundering header from a Quick corner and Whiddington reacted quickest to stab home.

After the break, Nailsea pulled a goal back with a penalty and equalised soon after forcing the game into extra time.

No further goals were scored and a penalty shoot-out followed. Randall and Nutt coolly converted penalties and with Jakeman amazingly saving the first 3 Nailsea attempts, Owen stepped up and fired Worle into the quarter-finals.

Special mentions go to Brinson, Quick, Nutt and Jakeman, but Shane Quick got the Curry Garden man of the match.
