Nine members of Avon Ski Club took part in the Scottish and British Ski Championships in France.
AVON Ski Club had nine of its young members taking part in the recent Scottish and British Ski Championships, which took place in Courcheval and Meribel in the French Alps.
George Case, who has been training with the British Ski Academy for the season, came an admirable third in the Under-12s race at the Scottish and recorded a fourth and fifth place at the British Championships.
Lauren Black, from Priory School, came 12th in the Scottish and 18th in the British Championships Under-12s, being within 10 per cent of the time of the winning racer.
Callum Black from Kewstoke Primary, was unfortunate in the Scottish race to have been subject to a timing breakdown and so only his first of four times was recorded, which was his slowest time, and at the British Championships he came 18th and 23rd in the Under-10s.
Eight-year-old Max Schubert improved on his 16th place at the Scottish Under-10s with two 10th places in the British Championships, on a course that he now knows well.
Lewis Williams and Callum Bannister were experiencing their first races on snow at the Scottish Championships and acquitted themselves well, Lewis in the Under 14s posted two similar times in both the slalom and the giant slalom to finish 40th and 48th.
Callum Bannister, in the under-16s came a creditable 40th in the giant slalom, having missed a gate and climbed back up to make sure he completed the course.
Darcie Coates, another BSA winter pupil, posted two 24th places in the Scottish, closely followed by Ellie Thurston with a 21st and 22nd place, and at the British Championships the girls posted 24th and 22nd respectively.
Ellie’s brother Tomas missed the slalom, but scored a great 26th place in the Under-14 giant slalom.
The race support and driving team of Peter Kennel and Fraser Black were ably assisted on course by Max’s coach Jean Phillipe, and thanks also to Max’s mum Fiona for being the hostess.
The club will be travelling to Landgraaf Snoworld in Holland in August for more indoor training, and are looking to repeat the race support at the Anglo Scottish Championships at New Year.
Also thanks to both Rossignol and Leki for their support, and for the support from Meribels’ Ski Basics and Bristol’s own ‘Leonardo’, Stephen Jabs Painters.
Avon Ski Club train at the Mendip Snowsport Centre in Sandford every Tuesday night from 6-8pm. For any enquiries please contact the club via email@example.com or ring 07721 594676.
The club will again be competing in the Summer Race League at the Gloucester Slope, beginning on May 11.
