Weston’s Somerset Cup victory over University of Bath was marred by a serious injury to scrum-half Ollie Trott.

WESTON 60 pts

UNIVERSITY OF BATH 36 pts

IN AN entertaining Somerset Cup quarter-final at the Recreation Ground, 13 tries were scored, eight of them by the hosts.

The Seasiders led after only 52 seconds with a try by win Chris Young, assisted by Ollie Caton and full-back Ross Bennett.

Fly-half Dan Lomax’s attempted conversion struck a post and in the fifth minute the students took the lead when fly-half Will Finn converted scrum-half Hugo Stiles’ try.

But that was the only time that the students were ahead as six minutes later Glenn Dickson’s try and conversion gave Weston the lead that they were never to lose.

Finn and Dickson exchanged penalties before the New Zealander’s grubber produced a try for Caton, Dickson converting for a 22-10 lead at the break.

Nine phases at the start of the second half eventually gave a try to skipper George Sparks for Dickson to convert, but the 13th penalty against the hosts produced a try for the students by flanker Adam McCarthy which Finn converted.

In the 52nd minute a line-out drive resulted in a touchdown by hooker Mike Hocking and Dickson’s conversion took the score to 36-17.

But the visitors persisted and Finn was soon converting a try by full-back Hamish Dalgarno. But three minutes later Weston scrum-half Ollie Trott was stretchered off with a serious looking leg injury.

On the hour, Dickson’s second penalty extended Weston’s lead and his conversion of centre Robbie Mackay’s try took the hosts to 46-24.

However, the students were not finished as Stiles converted a try by flanker Ini Owofemi. Lomax quickly replied, but the University’s fifth try was scored by replacement Alex Tagg.

But Weston had the final word with a try by debutant No 8 Tom Sugg, Dickson adding his seventh conversion to bring his season’s total to 88.

The Seasiders return to league action on Saturday when Bridgwater will be the visitors to the Recreation Ground (2pm at time of going to press).

This will not be an easy encounter, especially if the hosts continue to concede so many penalties. In the last two matches, they have been penalised now fewer than 29 times and these figures need to be addressed if they are to consider themselves to be promotion candidates.

Weston: R Bennett, C Young, R Mackay, G Dickson, I Caton, D Lomax, O Trott, R Ford, M Hockiong, O Streeter, S Hudson, B Webb, S Eaton, S Fisher, G Sparks (c). Replacements: J Whatley, P Hobbs, J Pullen, M Burns, R Johnson, T Hannam, T Sugg.

WESTON scrum-half Ollie Trott, who was carried off during Saturday’s match against University of Bath, has suffered a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle.

He underwent an operation at the General Hospital on Monday. It is likely that Trott, who had enjoyed a fine match, will miss the remainder of the season.
