St Andrews defeated Victoria in the Turnbull Cup on an extra end, despite trailing for much of the match.

PLAYING a Turnbull Cup match at Victoria, the Saints were always trailing and at the halfway stage they were 10 shots adrift.

They slowly edged nearer to the Victoria total and on the final end, the scores across all four rinks was tied with two drawn rinks and one rink apiece.

The match went into the extra end played between a rink drawn before the start of the match, the Saints rink came out on top and progressed through to the next round.

Over 50 members enjoyed a weekend tour to Tenby in Wales, with good weather, great bowls and excellent company. Ashcombe played matches at Tenby, Pembroke Dock, Neyland, Fishguard, Firbanks and Beechwood, the latter two were in Newport on the way home.

At all clubs, Ashcombe were given a warm welcome and many expressed interest in visiting Ashcombe. After the final game, Firbank catered for all bowlers with a superb cooked meal.

CLARENCE B team kept their 100 per cent record in the Somerset County League after a tense, two-shot away victory over Portishead RBL C.

Only one visiting rink finished up – Phil Lewis, Alan Bishop, Duggie Grier and John Edwards. But also crucial to the Clarence team’s fifth victory were the seven shots gained in the final two ends by Chris Read’s losing four.

The stand-out trio for Clarence second team against their Ashcombe counterparts were Chris Tippett, Duggie Grier and skip John Atkins, who piled up 28 shots to win by 21. Other winning skips were Ivan Phipps and Brian Hanks, while Mike Davies drew.

Welsh tourists Pontyclun visited Clarence for a closely-contested men’s match, with the home team winning four of the five rinks to finish eight shots ahead.

Tony Mannion’s rink were one-shot winners for Clarence, as were Chris Read’s four, while Brendan Duffy had two to spare and Mick Edlin triumphed by a six-shot margin, having been five behind with five ends to go.

WINSCOMBE beat Fosseway in their first Turnbull Cup game this season, winning on all four rinks and by 44 shots and play Clevedon in the next round.

In the Clevedon & District Co-operative Funeralcare League, Winscombe continued their success when they won against Clevedon by 50 shots, gaining maximum points and remain top of the league.

Isle of Wedmore proved to be tough opposition away in the Over-60s Cup, knocking Winscombe out with a 115 to 89 shot win in the first round.

Winscombe B beat Mark Moor by seven shots in the Somerset County League, despite only winning on one of the three rinks.

In the two mixed friendly games played, there were wins against Wrington away by 23 shots and a home win against the tourists from Hay-on-Wye by 29 shots.

In the first round of the Weston & District Triples Knockout Cup, the men played at home against Winscombe and won handsomely. Keith Burt led his team to the best win of the day 23-11.

There were two mixed friendly matches, with the first played away at South Petherton, resulting in a good win for the home team, who won by 96 shots to 65. Brian Aston and his team had the only win of the day 21-16.

Wedmore fared better when they visited Ashcombe, winning the match by 58 shots to 45. Maureen Hordle and her team clinched the victory with a 26 -12 win.

ST ANDREWS Ladies played three friendly games and enjoyed a good win by 34 shots away to Wessex and lost by two shots at home to Victoria and by three shots at Burnham.
