WESTON have endured an horrendous first half to their Blue Square South season, managing just four wins and four draws from their 23 league games, which sees them slip to one from bottom of the table.

In these games, Weston have used 36 players, either through injury or suspension, which does not lead to consistency with players having to get used to one another or else having to play in unaccustomed positions with the inevitable consequences.

Goals are hard to come by with Dave Gilroy, who came on loan for seven games from Newport County, the leading scorer with seven, followed by Darren Mullings with four. Three players, Marc McGregor, Jack Compton and Ashan Holgate, who are all no longer with the club have netted three each. Clayton Fortune and Ben Cleverley have scored twice each and other goals came from Josh Klein-Davis and Josh Llewellyn, Ben Joyce and Adi Harris who are all no longer with the club.

Obviously, this is the most important aspect of the performances that must be looked at with some urgency by manager Andy Gurney and his assistant Chris Smith.

Yet individually the players have a lot of talent between them as witnessed by performances against Dover Athletic, Worcester City, Weymouth and Lewis at home where they played some quality football and at Chelmsford away where they were denied a deserved win by a last-minute equaliser.

Other times, they looked like a poor pub team called out of the bar minutes before kick-off, against Bath City at home being a good example. The defence needs to take more care in their clearances where, instead of lumping the ball anywhere up field where it is inevitably returned with interest by a grateful opposition, they should at least try to give a decent service to the strikers who were starved of possession for long periods.

In cup games, Weston had another dismal season, going out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle to Havant and Waterlooville, the FA Trophy also at the first hurdle to Carshalton Athletic in a replay and against Frome Town in the Somerset Premier Cup, a sad catalogue.

For the sake of the long-suffering and loyal supporters, let us hope they can turn things round in the remaining league game and avoid the embarrassment of being in the relegation zone for another season.

WESTON'S New Year's Day at Bath City was a victim to the cold spell, being called off an hour before the scheduled 3pm kick-off.

In the morning, Bath officials stated the game was on and match referee Anthony Coggins passed the pitch fit on his first inspection, but later changed his mind after protests by some of the players.

Adi Harris who was named captain at the start of the season but was recently suspended, has left the club by mutual agreement and has signed for Bath City for a third spell. All at the Woodspring Stadium wish him well.

On Saturday, Weston are home to Bromley (3pm), weather permitting and will be looking for a better performance. When the sides met in Kent back in September the game ended 1-1, Ashan Holgate scoring for Weston.
