FIFTEEN Weston College Football Academy students were amongst 37,500 young people who took part in the Gothia World Cup in Sweden.

The largest youth world cup for under-11s to under-18s saw 1,615 teams from 78 nations from Australia and Brazil to Mongolia, Mexico and Iraq play in Gothenburg.

Football Academy director, Ryan Northmore, said: “We won a local tournament which qualified our academy team to represent the United Kingdom’s ‘Meet the World Team’. The team and college would like to thank the sponsors SKF, who made this event possible.

“We made it to the last 32 in their football groups playing against teams from Canada, Czech Republic, Sweden and France.

“We also helped break a Guinness Book of World Records for the highest number of nations to go up in the Gothenburg Ferris wheel – 65 nationalities took part.”

Curriculum co-ordinator, James Hazzard said: “This was an excellent opportunity for the students to interact and play football with teams from all over the world, as well as experience taking part in a World Cup tournament.”
