UPHILL A, B and C and teams all won their matches this week and the men’s team drew with top of the division Winscombe.

The A team played a local derby match against Wyvern A and won by nine rubbers to nil. The team of Paul Edwards, Becky Matthews, Mark Edwards, Nicky Mills, Matt Cole and Christy Langford all played well and won their rubbers in straight games.

So far this season, the team have played eight matches, won 71 rubbers and conceded only one. They have already become league champions for the seventh consecutive year with two matches still to play.

The B team were away to Nailsea & Yatton A and produced a good team performance with all the players winning rubbers.

The Uphill team was Ellie Jewell, Wei Chung, Steph Hadley, Brian Hadley, Denise Burton and Glynn Davies.

The evening started badly for Uphill as they lost the first two mixed rubbers. The Uphill team then hit back with Denise and Glynn winning an exciting rubber against Cathy Alexander and Bob Paice and followed this up with a win in the first ladies rubber when Ellie and Steph beat Athene Lane and Terri O’Shea in another closely contended rubber, to bring the scores level at two rubbers each.

The Nailsea ladies won the next two rubbers comfortably. The Uphill men then proceeded to win all three men’s rubbers to finish with the B team’s first win of the season by five rubbers to four. The only person to win all his rubbers was Glynn Davies.

The C team were at home to Chew Valley and won by six rubbers to three. The team consisted of Matthew Valentine, Julie O’Sullivan, Robin Curry, Maureen Matthews, Glynn Davis and captain Fiona Singleton.

The evening started well for Uphill as they won all the mixed rubbers, but then lost their way in the ladies, losing all three rubbers. The men then came to the rescue winning two rubbers comfortably and being given the third due to a leg injury to Alex Dadley. The players to win all their rubbers were Matt, Robin and Glynn.

The men’s team were away to top of the league Winscombe and came away with a 3-3 draw. The team of Robin Curry, Carl Harrison, captain Bill Ponting and Sourish Ganapathi gave a good account of themselves and well deserved the draw.

It was good to see that the only player to win all his rubbers was Sourish, an Uphill junior.
