Weston Swimming Club finished fourth in the latest round of the mini-series held at Horfield.

As the starting signal was given for the first event, the deafening noise switched to silence as Weston’s juniors embarked upon the third round of the mini-series at a packed Horfield pool.

What could the young guns do against Backwell, Clevedon, City of Bristol, Soundwell, Bristol Penguins and the thus far invincible Severnside Tritons?

Event one felt like the Eurovision Song Contest with nil points awarded to Team Weston. However, in mini-series this was on account of a blistering medley swim by Olivia Finch, whose time generated a speeding ticket. As the evening wore on, this became a recurring theme with Ben Smith collecting another soon after.

Inside the first 10 events, legal wins were provided by Chloe Soverall, Ashton Gilmore and Lily-Em Spearing. Four wins, the boy’s medley relay team of Harvey Mount, Ashton Gilmore, Fergus Hammond and Zack Hadley; Millie Redman, Taylor Plaistow and Olivia Finch, in quick succession propelled the mighty purple army up to second place, just five points behind Severnside after 20 events.

A crop of five speeding tickets in 12 events saw Weston lose momentum in the points table, but the swims produced by Fergus Hammond, Evie Nevmerzinskaja, the medley team of Angharad Laraman, Leah Williams, Charlotte Wigley and Chloe Soverall; Maisie Smith and the girls’ relay quartet of Julia Trybull, Evie, Chloe and Olivia were fantastic, and offer great hope for the future of Weston swimming.

More wins came from superfast fly ladies Angharad Laraman and Millie Redman, Charlotte Wigley’s breaststroke and the boy’s relay team of Fergus, Zack, Harvey and Ashton.

Before the abacus came out to work out the final points, there was just time for Zack to collect a speeding ticket in the backstroke individual and for the girls’ foursome of Olivia, Evie, Julia and Chloe in the team freestyle relay.

In the final reckoning, with so many speeding tickets issued, Weston finished a superb fourth place on 201 points, within 13 points of second and third, both of whom collected far fewer speeding tickets, as did Severnside, who came out on top with 232.

Huge congratulations to the full team of (excluding those mentioned previously): Archie Wait-Morris, Luke Ashurst, Hallie Soverall, Leeroy March, Tristan Soper, Emily Knight, Finn Williamson, Eloise Robinson, Owain Edwards and Darcy Purnell.

Each and every swimmer made a valuable contribution to the overall team performance, with several swimming up in older age categories.

Thanks to the volunteers who organised the event, coaches, team managers and officials, as well as all the club’s supporters.
