Winscombe Lawn Tennis Club held its annual men’s and ladies’ doubles tournament.
Tennis clubs from across Bristol and North Somerset came together at Winscombe Lawn Tennis Club for the men’s and ladies’ doubles tournaments.
The men’s tournament attracted some high quality players from local clubs such as Woodlands, Congresbury and Weston. Mike Gready and Alex Wilkins took home the winner’s trophy, overcoming Jamie Allen and Dean Cope in the final.
The tournament came ahead of the start of the North Somerset Tennis League, in which Winscombe will field several men’s and ladies’ teams, hoping to top their outstanding performance last summer.
The standard of tennis in the ladies’ tournament was as high as ever and saw a closely fought semi-final between Sarah Townsend and Linda Hall of Wells and Jenny Bird and Sarah Waring of Cleeve.
Cleeve finally gained the upper hand and faced Juliet Knight and Vanessa Brill of Cheddar in the final. The pair from Cheddar took the title, a long-awaited victory for Juliet who had reached the semi-finals in 2015 and 2016 and was runner-up in 2014.
Committee member, Chris Mullett, who organised the men’s event said: “These tournaments are a great showcase of the tennis talent in North Somerset. We are always delighted to host them at Winscombe, particularly given we have recently invested in the club, improving court surfaces and thoroughfares. It has been a terrific opener to the new season and we are looking forward to the upcoming matches.”
Winscombe will hold its annual open day on Saturday from 10am-4pm. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome to try their hand with the support of club coach, Greg Spink, and other members of the committee.
