THE last eight of the singles in the Weston Ladies’ Open Bowls Tournament, sponsored by Optika, includes three members of the local Wessex Ladies club.

Club president Ann Fewings went through with a 21-15 victory over Birmingham bowler Audrey Cox, a former winner of the pairs and mixed pairs at the tournament.

On the next rink to that match, Wessex member Audrey Powell took another notable scalp, beating Gloucestershire county player Elaine Lewis by four shots.

The Wessex duo were joined in the quarter-finals by clubmate Mary Hawkins, who accounted for Monmouth’s Pat Hawkins 21-18.

Singles champion Gill Fry (Gloucester Spa) beat Wessex Ladies’ secretary Joan Davis. A fourth Weston bowler, Victoria’s Margaret Hillman is also through after a 21-20 victory.

Clarence club captain Roger Burrough is the only player from the host clubs through to the unified singles quarter-finals.

In the ladies’ pairs, Jackie Ware and Meg Favis (St Andrews), champions for the last two years, edged through to the third round, with Ann Campbell standing in for Favis, who was attending a family funeral. They needed an extra end to win by one.

Also through are two Wessex Ladies’ teams, Joan and Mary Davis and Chris Peart/Ann Fewings.

Locals to reach the third round of the mixed pairs were Clarence club secretary Tony Mannion, partnering Audrey Cox (King’s Heath), and Pat Taylor (Wessex), with Ashcombe’s Derek Cooper, her son’s father-in-law.
