Tough condition at the local lakes

Anglers at Bristol Water fisheries have faced a tough week, with little buzzer hatching and prolific weed growth.

FLY anglers faced a much tougher week at Chew Valley this week with feeding fish difficult to find.

Areas which have produced good catches recently, East Shore and the Island, have been much more difficult. Fish were stocked from the Dam and Nunnery and both of these places have seen some better catches at times.

Although many of the evenings have looked promising, there has been little in the way of hatching buzzer, and without these the rises have been disappointing.

Best fish from the lakes this week was a 5.03lb rainbow caught by ranger John Harris in front of picnic area one.

It was a much better week for anglers fishing at Blagdon, despite the prolific weed growth around much of the lake.

Boats have been taking fish from many areas and the bank fishing has also improved. The sunny conditions have not helped much during the daytime, but evenings have seen plenty of feeding fish around the weed beds and often a decent rise too.

Polish Water, Holt Bay, Top End, Butcombe and most of the north bank have been successful areas. Nymphs and buzzers on a floating line is the best method, although dries can be worth a try if fish are seen.

At the Barrows, it has been very weedy in places, making fishing hard. Few fish have been caught during the daytime. Landing fish hooked near the weed is also challenging, with some fish falling to the mouse in the few clear areas.

Levels at both Litton lakes are falling again and the top lake can be difficult to fish as is it shallow. Most anglers are fishing the lower lake and although there is plenty of weed, especially near the Lodge, fish are being taken.

Try a washing line with nymphs and a black booby. The popular gold heads should be left in the box, otherwise you’ll be removing weed from your hook every cast. Dries have worked in the evenings.
