Weston’s Sam Trego hits 160 not out and takes five wickets in emphatic victory

WESTON got back to winning ways on Saturday with an emphatic win over Chippenham.

Batting first, Weston got off to a solid start with openers Andrew Fear and Simon Green putting on 53. After their departure the innings continued steadily with John Davidson and Sam Trego.

The two batsmen were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over consistently and both looked comfortable at the crease. Man of the match Trego was looking in excellent form as he continually punished the bad ball with some powerful stroke play and, after Davidson was removed for 22, Trego went into overdrive.

He smashed the ball to all parts of the ground and it soon became clear the Chippenham attack had no answer to Trego in this sort of form. He reached 100 with still plenty of the innings left and took advantage of this by continuing to stamp his authority on the game. Trego ended the innings on 160 not out, a total which included 17 fours and seven sixes. A truly superb knock, it contributed hugely to Weston amassing a formidable 307 for 6 off their 50 overs.

At the tea interval the rain began to fall, but it soon cleared and due to the stoppage Chippenham were given a revised target of 246 off 40 overs.

They were pegged back early on by some tight bowling by opening bowlers Sean Stringer and Tom Main. Wickets began to fall at regular intervals, Tom Main starting things off by removing opener Harrison and twin brother Ben accounting for danger man Qureshi.

The Weston spinners Ashley Allen and Sam Trego then continued in the same vain. This was to turn out to be Trego’s day as he bowled superbly and put the Chippenham batsmen under constant pressure. He ended with match winning figures of 5-10. He was supported brilliantly by Allen, who ended with figures of 3-8. Chippenham were bowled out for just 75 in the 30 over.

* Weston 4ths returned to Clarence Park for the visit of top of the table Wembdon 4ths and grasped defeat from the jaws of victory.

Yet again Jon Lawrence won the toss and very quickly put Wembdon in on a very soft wicket. Andrew Tidswell and man of the match Rhys Crocker bowled a decent line to start with, but some good striking of the ball by Weber saw Wembdon off to a good start.

When Declan McNulty caught Weber from a leading edge things started to change Weston’s way. Matt Knight removed two from the middle order and when Crocker was brought back for a second spell the Wembdon innings was quickly wrapped up for 130.

The Eaglets’ inning started well, with Aaron Hawkins (20) cleanly hitting the ball to the boundaries. Wiseman offered up a catch from a ball which stopped on him which brought Lawrence in. A swift 49 from the skipper saw the Eaglets in the driving seat at 75-4. However, the remaining six wickets fell for next to nothing and the Eaglets were all out for just 95.

Eight of Weston’s batsmen only contributed five runs between them which, despite reasonable bowling, simply is not good enough.
