Weston Athletic Club member Chris McMillan was the fastest club runner at the Clevedon Midsummer 10k.

NO FEWER than 42 yellow-vested Weston Athletic Club members turned out for the Clevedon Midsummer 10k, organised by Clevedon Athletic Club.

Attracted by the prospect of the fast, flat route, and the opportunity to knock time off their previous best for the distance, this year’s event did not disappoint, with 29 doing just that.

Quickest of all from the club was Chris McMillan, who completed the course in a blistering time of 33.42, and fourth overall. Kieron Summers was next, and also won his age category, finishing in 34.27.

Guy Bradford took the club’s third place in 37.22, proving that he can still turn out the results over short courses, as well as long distances.

Michelle Fryer knocked over 30 seconds off her previous best 10k time, set at Clevedon last June, to finish in 45.15. Nia Davies followed close behind in 45.51, and Carol O’Leary took the club females’ third place in 47.00. Carol also won her age category.

At the weekend, a handful of club members travelled to South Somerset to take part in two very different events. Guy Bradford and Simon Lund took on the Yeovil Marathon, with Guy coming in under the three hour mark in 2.58.26 and Simon in 3.16.48.

Meanwhile, just up the road, Sara Butcher and Pete Bartlett from the club completed the Martock 10k in 53.53 and 53.03 respectively.

Two of the club’s triathletes took on an epic challenge in the shape of the first Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire event. The race comprises a 1.2 mile open water swim, followed by a 56-mile bike ride and then a half marathon to round it all off.

Simon Andrews finished the event in 5.38.21, knocking over one and a half hours off his time last year for the same distance. Nick Cook completed the challenge for the first time in an impressive 6.13.37.

Entry opens next month for the club’s Christmas Cracker 10k event on December 6.
