Uphill Badminton Club’s C team men won all of their matches to record a narrow victory over Winscombe.

UPHILL Badminton Club’s C, E and men’s A have been in league action, with the C and men’s A teams winning and the junior E team losing.

The C team were at home to Winscombe A and won a close match by five rubbers to four. This match, between the two teams currently at the top of Division 3, was of a high standard.

The C team of Will Hollis, Maureen Matthews, Matt Valentine, captain Julie O’Sullivan, Carl Harrison and Fiona Singleton got off to a good start when the first mixed rubber was won by Will and Maureen.

Winscombe hit back with Tom Broom and Juliet Dormer winning the next mixed, before Carl and Fiona won the last mixed.

The Winscombe ladies proved too strong for those from Uphill, winning all three rubbers in straight games to put Winscombe 4-2 up.

The Uphill men responded to this by Will and Matt winning the first rubber and Will and Carl winning the second to bring the match all-square.

The last rubber was between Matt and Carl and Broom and David Heal. Winscombe won the first game, but Matt and Carl hit back winning the next two.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Will and Carl from Uphill and Juliet Dormer from Winscombe.

The junior E team were at home to Avon Vale and lost by five rubbers to four. The team, missing captain Luke Morgan through injury, was Lauren Rickwood, Rohan Weekes, Georgia Wood, Scott Booth, Alice Brett and Will Bennett.

Avon Vale got off to a good start by winning the first two mixed rubbers, but Will and Alice played some good badminton to win the third mixed.

The first ladies’ rubber was close, going to three games before the Avon Vale pair won. Lauren and Alice won the second rubber, before Avon Vale proceeded to win the third in straight games bringing the match score to 4-2 in favour of Avon Vale. The Uphill boys started to take control with Rohan and Scott winning and then Rohan and Will also winning to bring the match level at four rubbers each, but Avon Vale won the last men’s to win the match.

The men’s A team were at home to Clevedon Feathers and won by six rubbers to nil. This was a match with some close games, but only two rubbers went to three games.

The first between Fred Brown and Paul Wright from Uphill and Ian Coles and Plotr Zielinsky saw the Uphill pair triumphant. The second was the last rubber of the night between Callum Grayson and Brown from Uphill and Josh Turner and Ian Coles. This win keeps the A team at the top of their division.
