Uphill Badminton Club defeat their main title rivals of recent years, Clevedon Feathers, to maintain winning ways.
Uphill Badminton Club A team travelled to Clevedon to take on their main title rivals of recent years, Clevedon Feathers.
Following one win and one defeat to start the season, the Uphill six produced a solid display to stay in touch at the top of the table.
The team of Paul Edwards, Matt Cole, Mark Edwards, Claire Buckingham, Christy Cole and Becky Halfpenny all played well.
The mixed all went the way of Uphill, despite many close scorelines. The men’s were again all won by Uphill. Paul dominated his two rubbers to low scores, before Mark and Matt dragged it out to win 21-18 in the third.
The ladies produced some close high-quality rubbers. Claire and Christy won 21-13, 21-5. Feathers took the next in two games, before Christy and Becky won a three-setter to complete a fine 8-1 win.
The C team in their fourth match, hosted Chew Valley B at home. The team of Billy, Maureen, Paul, Jess, Craig and Bethan put up a good fight, but were beaten by the stronger team on the night.
The match started well with Billy and Maureen winning a tight first mixed rubber. This was where the success for Uphill ended with Chew taking the next seven rubbers, before Craig injured himself and had to concede the final men’s, to leave Chew sound 8-1 winners on the night.
The men’s A team continued their tough baptism in division 1 following their opening two losses, with a third to a strong Chew Valley side.
Due to last-minute issues, Uphill could only field three men meaning the opening three rubbers had to be conceded. The Uphill trio of Dong, Tony and Bobby gave a good account of themselves, but went down in two straight games in each of the three rubbers, meaning Chew handed out the teams third 6-0 loss.
