Uphill Badminton Club’s A team remain unbeaten and are top of the league table.

UPHILL Badminton Club’s A, D and men’s B teams have been in action with the A and men’s B teams winning and the D teams losing.

The A team were at home against Clevedon Feathers B team and won by nine rubbers to nil. The A team was Ellie Jewell, Paul Edwards, Christy Langford, Matt Cole, Becky Halfpenny and captain Mark Edwards.

All the Uphill team played well and only allowed two rubbers to go to three games. The first of these was the second mixed, which saw Christy and Matt start slowly against Vicky Giggs and Olly Powers losing the first game 16-21, but went on to win the next two.

The other rubber to go to three was the second men’s. In this Paul and Mark Edwards won the first game 21-13, but lost the second game 18-21, before coming back strongly in the last to win 21-7.

The A team have now played and won seven matches, won 59 out of 63 rubbers and head the league table with 73 points.

The D team were at home to Chew Valley A and lost by four rubbers to five. The D team, missing captain Jess Hargrave through injury, was Sourish Ganapathi, Bethan Dunning, Ted Woods, Dannie Stone, Brian Hadley and Alice Brett.

This was a close match with Chew having the stronger ladies and Uphill having the stronger men. The match was decided by the first rubber of the evening, when Sourish and Bethan lost a hard fought rubber in three sets.

Special mention must be made of junior Alice Brett playing her first game at this level winning her mixed in straight games with Brian Hadley. The only Uphill player to win all his rubbers was Brian Hadley.

The men’s B team were at home to Chew Valley A and won 4-2. Chew Valley won the first rubber before Nigel Judge and Keith Higgins won the next rubber for Uphill.

The third rubber of the evening was the only one to go to three games and James Clapham and Nigel Judge lost to Chew Valley’s Oscar Haywood and Tom Booth.

The Uphill players won the last three rubbers in straight games. Man of the match was Uphill’s Keith Higgins, who won all his rubbers.
