Uphill Badminton Club's juniors took on their Clevedon counterparts in two competitive matches.

Uphill Badminton Club had five teams in action last week, five senior and two junior.

Uphill C team got off to a storming start brushing aside league newcomers Hutton Moor 9-0. The team of Harry Gardner, Lewis Gilbert, Ben Moore, Anna Bickell, Beth Chadwick and Lucy Loud all played well.

The night’s closest rubber was the first mixed where Harry and Anna were pushed all the way coming through 21-15, 16-21, 21-18. The remaining mixed, men’s and ladies rubbers were all won in two games to complete an opening whitewash.

The D team opened their Division 5 campaign at home to Pill C and despite a valiant effort went down 8-1.

With a fair amount of nerves on show, the mixed games kind of summed up the night “close but no cigar”. A couple of points in their favour at crucial times would have swung it big time.

The men’s team hosted a strong Clevedon Feathers side and the night saw a comfortable 6-0 win for Clevedon.

The day got off to a bad start with Paul Wright being struck with injury and Tom Miller having a late double booking.

The team of Dennis Tsang, Tony Wilsher Day, Lewis Gilbert and Ben Moore all put up a good fight, but all rubbers were won in two games despite an 18 and 16 on the sheet.

Uphill Badminton Club juniors took part in two excellent friendly matches against Clevedon.

Big thanks go to Nicola Wall for bringing down two teams of six to play Uphill at short notice, with 24 juniors in action, many playing their first-ever match against another club.

The Under-14 match had far more closer games than the scoreline suggests. The Uphill team of Shuoshuo Jin, Elliot Millard, David Gumus, Emily Aldridge, Lewis Conroy and Hannah just had a bit too much strength and experience on the day.

The Under-10 encounter was a superb battle between two well-matched sides. After the six singles rubbers the scores were tied at 6-6.

This theme continued in the doubles with many shared rubbers. Uphill just edged ahead in the closing rubbers to run out 21-15 winners.

The Uphill six of Aidan, Sean, Oscar, Ivan, Ayshen and Shenay all played well, with four playing in their first match.

Big thanks go to Carrie Rose, Anna Bickell, Beth Chadwick, Lucy Loud and Aniraj Sapra, who all gave up their morning voluntarily to help.
