Uphill Badminton Club’s A team kept their 100 per cent record at Clevedon Feathers.

UPHILL Badminton Club had their A, C and E teams in action this week.

The A team were away to Clevedon Feathers B and continued their unbeaten run, winning by nine rubbers to nil. This, like the A team’s previous match against them, was a one-sided affair that was completed quickly, with all the rubbers being won in straight games.

The Uphill team of Paul Edwards, Becky Mathews, Mark Edwards, Nicky Mills, Matt Cole and Christy Langford have now played seven matches and won them all by 9-0.

The C team were away to Winscombe and lost by five rubbers to four. The team consisted of Glyn Davis, Julie O’Sullivan, Matthew Valentine, Maureen Mathews, Neil Burstow and captain Fiona Singleton.

Uphill got off to a poor start by losing the first two mixed rubbers. In the third mixed, Neil and Fiona beat Kate Tucker and Ian Tolley 21-18, 21-12 to bring Uphill back into contention.

The Uphill ladies then lost the first rubber, but came back strongly to win the next two. In the first men’s rubber, Glyn and Matt lost to Matt Heal and Oliver Dormer and the second rubber was a close affair before Heal and Tolley beat Glyn and Neil.

This proved to be the match decider as Matt and Neil won the first game of the third rubber after which Dormer retired injured and conceded.

The E team were away to Wedmore and lost by seven rubbers to two. This team consisted of Billy Fear, Felicity Pritchard, Neil Sandifer, Emily Walker, Luke Morgan and Dannie Stone.

The evening started with Wedmore winning all three mixed rubbers comfortably. In the first ladies’ rubber, Felicity and Emily won the first game 21-17, but then lost their focus losing the next two games. In the second ladies’ rubber, Felicity and Dannie beat Carole Carter and Heather Willcox. Wedmore won the third ladies rubber.

In the men’s, Billy and Neil produced some good badminton to beat Pip Patch and Matt Drew. Uphill lost the last two men’s rubbers due to too many unforced errors.

Despite the fact that only one rubber went to three games, the match was enjoyable with the experience of the Wedmore players showing against Uphill’s youngsters. The only players to win all their rubbers were Geoff Barham and Val Hart from Wedmore.
