Uphill Badminton Club’s A team maintained their unbeaten run, stretching back to November 2008.

UPHILL Badminton Club had the A, B and D teams back in action this week after the Christmas and New Year break.

The A team, playing its fifth league match of the season, continued its whitewashing of opposition, this time with a 9-0 win, at home to Frys A. The team of Becky Matthews, Paul Edwards, Nicky Mills (captain), Mark Edwards, Christy Langford and Matt Cole all played well.

The only rubber that went to three games was between Christy and Matt against Annie Lawry and Matt Waldon, which the Uphill pair won, 21-15, 17-21, 21-16. This victory was the A team’s 33rd consecutive win in Division 1, stretching back to November 2008.

The B team playing away to Pill A, who they had beaten 7-2 at home earlier in the season, found difficulty in coming to terms with the conditions and in particular with the slippery floor, and lost by six rubbers to three.

The match was closer than the score would indicate as three of the rubbers went to three games with Pill winning two of them, one with a final game score of 22-20. Another rubber in which Pill came out on top was the second men’s, where the second game score was 30-29.

The D team, with three regular players missing, including captain Emily Look, were at home to Nailsea & Yatton B and won by six rubbers to three. The team consisted of Caroline Higgins, Matt Potts, Ellen Davis, Carl Harrison, Jess Hargrave and Tom Higgins, who all played well.

The match got off to a good start for Uphill with Caroline and Matt fighting back well after losing the first game 16-21, and then winning the next two 22-20, 21-18 to take the first rubber.

Ellen and Carl then lost a close second mixed 19-21, 19-21. Jess and Tom won the final mixed easily 21-8, 21-8. In the first ladies’ rubber, Caroline and Ellen were well beaten, but Uphill then won the next two ladies’ rubbers.

A similar pattern emerged in the men’s when Matt and Carl lost the first men’s, but the Uphill men won the last two rubbers comfortably.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Tom Higgins and Jess Hargrave, who was playing her first match for Uphill and is settling in well.
