Uphill Badminton Club men’s A team have dropped just one rubber this season and are clear at the top of the table.

UPHILL Badminton Club had three two teams in action last week with the men’s A team winning and the C team and men’s B teams losing.

The C team were home to unbeaten Nailsea & Backwell B and were defeated by seven rubbers to two. The team of Julie O’Sullivan (captain), Matt Potts, Fiona Singleton, Brian Hadley, Maureen Matthews and Glyn Davis all performed well against a strong Nailsea side.

Nailsea got off to a strong start with ex-Division 1 pair Tessa Moxham and Steve Phippen beating Julie and Matt in straight games. This was followed with another comfortable win in the second mixed rubber, before Uphill hit back taking the third with Maureen and Glyn winning in three games.

Nailsea then took charge winning all three men’s rubbers, despite the last going to three games. They also took the opening two ladies’ rubbers before Fiona and Maureen took the final rubber of the evening to leave Nailsea as 7-2 winners.

The men’s A team continued their strong start to the season defeating Wells City A 6-0. The team of James Bright, Neil Sandifer, Ian Gilmore (captain) and Paul Wright were all on top form and won all six rubbers in straight games.

This result leaves Uphill a long way clear at the top of the division with 29 points from a possible 30.

The men’s B team were at home to a strong Clevedon Feathers side and lost by six rubbers to nil. The side of Grant Kelly, Bill Ponting (captain), Nigel Judge and Tony Wilsher Day all put up a brave fight but were outplayed by an extremely strong Feathers outfit.

Number one man Rob Armstrong has both county junior and senior experience and despite Uphill’s best efforts he easily controlled all of his rubbers, with Clevedon winning all six rubbers in straight games.
