Uphill Badminton Club started the league season with two four of its teams playing each other.

UPHILL Badminton Clubs A, B, C, D and E teams have all had their first league matches.

The A and B teams played each other in Division 1, the C and D teams also took on each other in Division 3 and the E team played Redwood Lodge in the Division 5 of the North Somerset League.

The A team won by nine rubbers to nil. Both teams consisted of the same players as last season. The A team being Ellie Jewell, Paul Edwards, Christy Langford, Matt Cole, Becky Halfpenny and captain Mark Edwards.

The B team was Emily Page-Symonds, Anjam Ajif, Harriett Birt, Robin Curry, Steph Hancocks, and Rob Morray.

The A team won all the rubbers comfortably in two games with the exception of the last men’s between Matt and Mark and Robin and Rob which went to three games, with Robin and Rob winning the first game 21-13, before Matt and Mark came back to win the next two 21-15, 21-11.

The C team were at home to the D team and won by seven rubbers to two. The C team of Matt Valentine, captain Julie O’Sullivan, Carl Harrison, Fiona Singleton, Glyn Davis and Maureen Matthews got off to a poor start against the D team of Jess Hargrave, Sourish Ganapathi, Beth Dunning, Ted Woods, Dannie Stone and Grant Kelly, when Matt and Julie lost the first mixed rubber.

The C team hit back winning the next two mixed rubbers and all three ladies’ rubbers. The D team first two men of Sourish and Ted then beat Matt and Carl in a close three game rubber. The C team closed out the match winning the last two men’s rubbers.

The E team of five juniors and one senior, consisted of Lauren Rickwood, Brian Hadley, Chloe Palmer, Scott Booth, Georgia Woods and Will Bennett, were at home to Redwood Lodge and lost by three rubbers to six.

The evening started well for Uphill when Lauren and Brian won the first mixed. After that Redwood Lodge won the next two mixed rubbers and all the ladies’ rubbers in straight games.

Uphill came back in the men’s rubbers with first Brian and Scott winning in straight games followed by Brian and Will winning in three games after losing the first. The third men’s also went to three games before the Redwood Lodge pairing of Paul Hancock and Richard Girling managed to beat Scott and Will.

For Uphill, Brian Hadley won all his games and Sue Stone and Lynn Gibb won all their games for Redwood Lodge. Both Georgia and Will who are juniors played well for their first matches at a senior level
