UPHILL Badminton Club have had the A, D and men’s teams in action since the New Year and produced two wins and a draw.

The A team played Frys A at home and won by nine rubbers to nil. The team of Paul Edwards, Becky Matthews, Mark Edwards, Nicky Mills, Matt Cole and Christy Langford again all played well and whitewashed their rivals.

All the rubbers but one were won comfortably in straight games, with the closest score being 21-18. The only rubber to go to three games was the last ladies in which Nicky and Christy allowed Ann Lawry and Naomi Leppier to win the second game of the rubber, but then switched up a gear to take the last game 21-11.

The team have now played six matches, not conceded any rubbers, and won 54. They are currently top of the league with a maximum 66 points.

The D team were at home to Wedmore and won by seven rubbers to two. The team consisted of Emily Look, Grant Kelly, Kate Robinson, Andy Potts, Ellen Davis and Peter Rybaruk.

This team, which consists largely of young developing players, are all playing and progressing well this season. The two rubbers that Wedmore won were the first mixed and the first men’s, both of which involved the evergreen Phillip Patch, who made the Uphill players work hard.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Emily Look, Kate Robinson and Andy Potts. The D team have now played five matches, won four, got 31 rubbers and 39 points and are lying in second place in Division 5.

The men’s team, with a blend of youth and experienced players, were away to Nailsea & Backwell and drew an exciting match three rubbers each. This was a close encounter between two mid-table teams that produced some extensive rallies with accurate attacking shots.

The match began with Bill Ponting and Billy Fear playing well with few unforced errors, which resulted in a convincing win for the Uphill pair. Peter Argles and Tim Ashfield of Nailsea & Backwell then narrowly beat Matt Potts and Paul Wright in a three game rubber.

The teams then shared the next two rubbers, with Uphill youngsters Potts and Fear winning the first and Ashfield and Matt Caine winning the second. Nailsea & Backwell then went into a 3-2 lead in the match when Ashfield and John Walton beat Wright and Fear. Potts and Ponting then beat Argles and Caine to complete a great night’s badminton and draw the match three rubbers to each team.
