UPHILL Badminton Club had the B, D and E teams in league action this week.

The B team were at home to CBC@Backwell and won a close competitive match by 5 rubbers to 4. Christy Langford, Brian Hadley, captain Denise Burton, Rob Morray, Teresa Davison and Matt Valentine played well.

The first three mixed rubbers all went to three games with CBC@Backwell winning the first 21-19, 10-21, 21-19 and then winning the second 21-19, 18-21, 21-15. Uphill then hit back with Teresa and Matt winning the last mixed 16-21, 21-12, 21-17.

Uphill then started to take control by winning all the ladies' rubbers in straight games.

Brian and Rob won the first men's rubber comfortably for Uphill 21-14, 21-14, which gave them the five games needed to win the match.

However the CBC@Backwell men did not give up and fought back to win the second rubber 21-17, 22-20 and then the last 21-19, 21-15, to complete an enjoyable night's badminton.

The only player to win all their rubbers was Teresa Davison with good support from Matt, Christy and Denise. This win means they will now be promoted and join the A team in Division 1 next season.

Uphill D team were at home and lost to top of Division 4 Chew Valley A 7-2. Fiona Singleton, Robin Curry, Rachel Harding, Grant Kelly, captain Sue Garrett and Dave Barnes worked hard, but were beaten by a stronger team.

The two rubbers which Uphill won were the second mixed where Rachel and Grant beat Nic Scott and Alex Dadley 21-17, 20-22, 21-17 and the first men's in which Robin and Grant beat Graham Scott and Alex Dadley 21-12, 21-19. The only players to win all their rubbers were Meroli Long, Nic Scott, Lyn Joyner and Josh Joyner from Chew Valley.

The E team consisting of juniors Kate Robinson, Andrew Potts, Kirby Cheung, Billy Fear, Caroline Higgins and Sourish Ganapathi, were playing away to Winscombe B and won 6-3.

The team started well by winning the first three mixed rubbers. The first mixed saw Kate and Andrew win 21-19, 21-14. In the second, 11-year-old Kirby and Billy won the first game comfortably 21-14, then lost the next 19-21, but came back from behind in the third to win 23-21.

The Uphill girls won the three ladies' rubbers easily in straight games. The Winscombe men then took control of all three rubbers winning the first comfortably in straight games 21-13, 21-15 and the second 21-17, 21-15.

In the third, Sourish and Billy fought hard in the first game before losing 24-22 but then slipped away in the second losing 21-16.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Kate, Kirby and Caroline with support from Andrew, Billy and Sourish. This team now needs 12 points from their last two matches to gain promotion.
