Uphill Badminton Club’s D team recorded its first victory of the season.

UPHILL Badminton Clubs D and the junior Under-15 and Under-18 teams have been in league action.

The D team recorded their first win in Division 3, the Under-15 team lost on points and the Under-18 team won.

The D team were at away to Chew Valley A and won by eight rubbers to one. The result does not reflect how close this match was as four of the rubbers went to three games with Uphill winning all of them.

The D team of captain Jess Hargrave, Sourish Ganapathi, Beth Dunning, Ted Woods, Caroline Higgins and Tom Higgins started the evening well, winning the first two mixed rubbers, both in three games.

The brother and sister pairing of Tom and Caroline won the third mixed in straight games. Chew hit back to win the first ladies’ rubber in straight games, but that was to be their only success as Jess and Caroline and Bethan and Caroline both won.

The first men’s rubber was hard fought before Sourish and Ted triumphed. The Uphill men won the final two rubbers in straight games. The only players to win all their rubbers were Sourish, Ted, Tom and Caroline.

The Under-18 team of Rohan Weekes, Will Bennett, Bethan Dunning and Manu Shaji were away to Keynsham and won by nine rubbers to one.

It was unfortunate that one of the Keynsham team failed to turn up and therefore had to concede one singles rubber and three doubles rubbers.

In the first two singles rubbers, both Rohan and Will won in straight games, but in the third rubber, Bethan recovered to win in three.

In the doubles rubbers, Rohan and Will and Rohan and Bethan won in straight games, but Will and Bethan were beaten. The only player to win all his matches was Rohan Weekes from Uphill.

The Under 15 team were also away to Keynsham had a close encounter, with the teams tying 5-5 on rubbers, 12-12 on games and could only be separated by total points scored with Kensham coming out on top.

The Uphill team consisted of Jighin Shaji, Tom Miller, Rhys Davies and Donghao Wang. Jighin won the first singles in three games, but Tom and Rhys lost the next two singles in straight games before Donghao won the last singles in straight games.

In the doubles, Jighin and Tom lost a closely fought rubber, Rhys and Donghao won in straight games, before Jighin and Rhys lost. Tom and Donghao won their rubber in straight games.

Another three game rubber saw Jighin and Donghao triumphant. In the final rubber, Tom and Rhys lost in straight games to end a very close and enjoyable match.
