Three Uphill Badminton Club teams all had big wins in the North Somerset Mixed League.

UPHILL Badminton Club A, B and men’s A teams were in action with two of them whitewashing their opposition and the other winning 8-1.

The A team were away to Portishead A in Division 1 and the team of, Matt Cole, Mark Edwards (captain), Anjam Ajif, Christy Langford, Ellie Jewell and Becky Halfpenny won by nine rubbers to nil.

This match was competitive and not as one-sided as the match score would suggest. Four of the rubbers went to three games and a further rubber had a game score of 21-23.

The team had Anjam, up from the B team for his first division one match, as Paul Edwards, Uphill’s number one man was out with a sprained ankle.

In the first mixed, Christy and Matt made a slow start before fighting back to win. Mark and Ellie won a tough first game in the second mixed 24-22, but then lost the second 19-21 before coming back strongly to win the third 21-8. Anjam and Becky lost their first game 21-19 but came back to win the next two.

The first two ladies’ rubbers Uphill won comfortably in straight games, but the third rubber was a roller-coaster throughout with Ellie and Becky eventually beating Kathryn Hole and Ellie Marsh in three.

The first two men’s rubbers were won easily, but in the third rubber between Mark and Anjam and Sam Quarmby and Ralph Eva, the Uphill pair lost the first game 18-21 before fighting back to win the next two.

The A team have now got maximum points from seven matches so need only 15 of a possible 33 points to become league champions for the ninth successive year.

The B team were away to Clevedon and won by eight rubbers to one. The Uphill team consisted of Anjam Ajif, Emily Page-Symonds, Robin Curry, Harriet Birt, Rob Morray (captain) and Teresa Davison standing in for Steph Hadley.

The evening started well for Clevedon when Grizelda Williams and Dave Lindsay beat Emily and Anjam in three, but this proved to be their only success as Uphill won all the other rubbers comfortably with only three going to three games.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Robin, Harriet, Rob and Teresa from Uphill. This team are in a strong position leading Division 2.

The men’s B team were away to Avon Vale and won all their rubbers for the first time this season. The team of Neil Burstow, Billy Fear, Nigel Judge and Tony Willsher-Day all played well.

Only two rubbers went to three games. Both finished with nail-biting finishes in favour of Uphill. The first was between Nigel and Tony against Piotr Zielinski and Nigel Sutton which the Uphill pair won.

The second also featured Tony, this time with Neil against Tom Britton and Nigel Sutton and this proved even closer before the Uphill pair won 27-25 in the third to complete an enjoyable night’s badminton.
