BADMINTON - UPHILL Badminton Club had both the B and D teams in league action this week.

The B team, playing their third league match of the season, had a local derby away to Wyvern B which they won by 7 rubbers to 2.

The team of Christy Langford, Brian Hadley, captain Denise Burton, Rob Morray, Ruth Harding and Robert Cole played well.

Only three rubbers went to three games and these were all won by Uphill. Wyvern started well when Louise Malik and Ross Maclennan won the first mixed 21-16, 21-16, but Uphill quickly hit back winning the next two mixed in straight games.

Then in the first two ladies' rubbers Christy, with good support from Denise and Ruth, won comfortably in straight games. The third ladies' rubber between Denise and Ruth and Tracy Hooper and Jane Burstow of Wyvern proved to be competitive before Denise and Ruth won the rubber 20-22, 21-19, 17-21.

In the men's rubbers, Brian and Rob won the first 21-8, 13-21, 19-21, the second was won by Wyvern 21-10, 21-15, but again Uphill struck back with Rob and Robert winning the last 17-21, 21-18, 21-23.

The only players to win all their rubbers with support from the other Uphill team members were Denise, Ruth and Rob Morray.

This continues the team's winning run and places them at the top of Division 2.

The D team, missing captain Sue Garrett, consisted of Fiona Singleton, Robin Curry, Claire Garrett, Grant Kelly, Rachel Harding and Dave Barnes, had another away fixture to Chew Valley A which they lost 7-2. The team of three experienced and three junior players worked hard against a team who are currently top of their division.

Uphill lost the first three mixed rubbers, although Fiona and Robin took the first to three games before losing 16-21, 21-16, 21-14. Uphill then lost the next three ladies' rubbers although again the first rubber went to three games before Fiona and Clare lost 18-21, 21-9, 21-10.

Uphill then hit back in the men's with Robin and Grant winning the first rubber 14-21, 14-21 and Robin and Dave winning the second 21-15, 15-21, 17-21. The last men's rubber was won comfortably 21-10, 21-14 by Chew Valley. Robin Curry and Rachel Harding produced vastly improved performances that bode well for the future.
