BANWELL Reserves boasted both the oldest and youngest players on the pitch getting there first starts for the club, with Jimmy Darch (46) and Joe Brett (16).

Veteran Darch marked his first start by scoring four goals as Banwell’s free-flowing football saw them carve open the Worle back line, with Brett and Harry Hornigold working well on the wings.

Russell Mitchell and Mark Jones were busy winning the midfield battle, setting up chances for Darch and Miller up front. Darch scored a hat-trick inside 30 minutes, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead at the break.

Worle were dealt a massive blow, losing the experienced Mike Parker to injury after a 50/50 challenge with Mitchell. Banwell’s back line of Purkis, Mitchell, Best, Evans and Lucas were rarely troubled and looked a strong unit when called upon.

Darch got his fourth and best goal, turning the defender and his shot finding the top corner of the goal. Lucas got the visitors fifth, finishing off a well-worked move before Hornigold completed the rout with an unstoppable drive from 30 yards.

Waymouth Signs man of the match was Harry Hornigold.

Locking Park 2

DIVISION 4 Players entertained Division 2 Locking Park in the first round of the Atwell Shield and recorded a comprehensive 7-2 victory.

After a rusty start, Players found themselves 1-0 down and struggling to get a handle on the game. It took time for the Players’ back four of Skinner, Jones, Clark and DeVanney to settle, but once they did, they gave Players the foundations to build on.

Tom Bush worked tirelessly up front and provided the first by setting up Curt Smith. Players took the lead shortly after with the goal of the game, Smith beating four players before curling the ball into the top corner. Josh Randall volleyed home from close range to make it 3-1 at the break.

In the second half, Players weathered an early surge from Locking Park with Callum Thompson making a number of good saves. Page and Williams were disciplined in midfield and started to dictate the play.

Randall extended Players lead with Smith again the provider. Substitute Steve Ballantine capped an entertaining cameo with two goals. Smith capped a fine performance with his hat-trick late in the game.

There were impressive performances across the park with Bush, Smith, Randall and Page in fine form. Rich Williams and Ballantine were superb in the second half and Thompson was excellent again in goal, but Huw Williams was the Frames man of the match.

Wrington-Redhill Res 6

WRINGTON moved into the next round of the Atwell Shield with a great team performance over a Wedmore side that play two divisions higher.

The visitors got their passing game going and put pressure on the Wedmore defence before Matt Tancock opened the scoring. This was quickly followed up with goals by captain Micky Edmunds and Chris Vowles to put Wrington firmly in control at the break.

In the second half, Wedmore got more into the game and keeper Jonathan Burnett was called into action, but was beaten by a neat finish. Wrington responded immediately when new signing Dan Tempan scored with a fine strike.

The home side never gave up and their hard work was rewarded with another goal. Manager Julian Moss introduced his three subs into the game and was rewarded when two off them scored.

Firstly Lloyd Richardson and then Dan McMullan netted to round off the scoring and and are now rewarded with Division 1 side Worle Lions in the next round.

Wrington’s Amor Stores man of the match was Simon Garrett.
