Victoria bowlers enjoyed a good week, winning three of their four matches.

THERE was a good feeling within the Victoria club this week as the Vikings won their first match, the Saxons defeated old rivals Ashcombe Crusaders and Victoria defeated Portishead in the first round of the Wedmore Plate.

NARROW defeats on all four rinks ended Clarence’s interest in the county Wedmore Plate away to local rivals St Andrews.

In windy conditions, two Clarence rinks went down by one and another by two, while former player Barrie Forse proved their nemesis in the fourth game, as he skipped his team to a four-shot victory.

The Golds, Clarence’s second team in the Over-60s League, managed three rink wins out of six at Isle of Wedmore, but went down by 18 shots overall.

Their best winners were Chris Tippett, Mike Scoins and team captain Mike Clay, who finished five ahead. Brendan Duffy and Mike Davies skipped the other successful Golds’ rinks.

The annual friendly match between Clarence men and Wessex ladies, who both play at Clarence Park, was curtailed by rain on Saturday, with between 12 and 14 of the scheduled 18 ends played.

The six triples rinks were shared, but a thumping victory by Dick Jackman’s team, who finished 26 clear, helped the men win by 32 shots.

Clarence’s Sunday mixed team finished up on only one of the five rinks against visitors Shipston Sports. Audrey Harris, playing outdoor bowls again after a two-year break, skipped the successful rink as Shipston won by 29 shots.

Clarence’s other lady skip Veronica Jones drew when her team earned nine shots on the final two ends.

Pete Palmer, who rejoined Clarence this year after a spell at Victoria, has had a great run in the Somerset Singles Championship.

He took a couple of good scalps and notched up two away victories before losing 21-14 in the fifth round to former Somerset indoor champion Andrew Owens (St Andrews), who had home advantage.

WINSCOMBE won four matches last week, but lost twice in the big games.

Portishead RBL avenged their defeat earlier in the week in the Clevedon and District League by winning the NSBA 4 Dimensions on shot difference when the rinks were shared.

The Turnbull Cup fifth round match against Clevedon at Winscombe also finished in defeat despite the rinks being shared, Clevedon having a big win on one rink.

In the other matches, Winscombe were easy winners at Wrryal Park when they won on all six rinks in their friendly triples.

The mixed friendly match against Wedmore was also won and included a hot shot (8 shots on one end) by the rink skipped by captain for the day Lesley Fredersdorff.

Winscombe have played Victoria four times so far this year and have won all four.

ISLE of Wedmore men recorded a good win in the Over-60s Triples League playing at home against Clarence Golds.

The best scoring rink was that led by Clive Panchaud with a 24-12 result.

In the men’s Mid-Somerset League, an away match at Prattens was hotly contested on all the rinks, Wedmore winning two rinks, drawing one and losing one. The scores were some of the closest of the season so far and only a good win by Ray Newell’s team clinched a victory for Wedmore.

Wedmore ladies played away against Wessex in the Mendip League, winning two rinks and losing one. The final score was 57-44 with Maureen Hordle’s team scoring a decisive 33-8 win.

The ladies managed to win all three rinks in their away match in the Victoria League against North Petherton scoring a useful 10 points – a friendly rink was also won. Gill Harvey’s team were the top performers with a 23-8 victory.

Wedmore lost two mixed friendly matches, the first against Paulton (71-91) saw three out of four rinks lose, with only Pauline Cottrell’s rink managing a draw.

The second match was away at Winscombe, where three out of four rinks were lost, with Colin Moss leading the only winning team. All the rinks were hotly contested as Wedmore went down 73 -84.
