Victoria enjoy successful week in league and cup competitions

VICTORIA enjoyed their best week of the season with both Over-60s teams winning against local opposition.

The A team also recorded a much-needed victory and a win in the National Double Rink competition.

The A team got back to winning ways in the Somerset County League with a comprehensive win over Purnells A, with two rink wins and a winning margin of 18 shots.

Excelling for Victoria was the rink led by Pete Wyatt with Lee Stocker, Ken Harvey and skip Will Harrison.

Victoria C played a strong Bristol B team who had the good fortune to be able to play some A team players and the difference showed in a comprehensive defeat for Victoria.

A victory over local rivals Clarence A in the National Double Rink competition saw Victoria through to the next round away to either Bristol A or Portishead RBL A.

Victoria won both rinks with a fine rink win of 13 shots by the rink skipped by Mike Cooper, with Pete Wyatt, Phil Fisher and Colin Gazzard.

In the Weston & District Over-60s League, the Saxons beat St Andrews Spartans by eight shots winning on just two rinks, but the 12-shot victory margin by the triple of John Mingoe-West, Tony Barnes and Ken Harvey swung the game in favour of the Saxons.

Victoria Vikings travelled to Ashcombe Templars and won by 12 shots, losing on just one rink and earning a much needed 16 points. Top rink was skipped by Graham Hodge with John Griffiths and Roy Bromet.

Victoria entertained Worcester in a mixed friendly with the hosts holding the upper hand at both five and 10 ends. However, the half-time tea break refreshed Worcester who caught up and passed Victoria, winning the match by a healthy margin of 20 shots. Victoria won on the two rinks skipped by Mike Stocker and Colin Gazzard.

ST ANDREWS won through to the third round of the National Top Club competition, winning 3-2 at home to Portishead RBL.

Portishead got off to a good start by winning the two-wood singles 14-13, George Guest for the Saints finished strongly, but just lost by one shot. Steve Davies squared the match for the home team winning his four wood singles 21-18.

The visitors went back in front beating the Saints’ pair of Nick Sell and Ken Curtis 27-9. Again the match was tied when the Saints’ trio of Andy McMillan, George Webber and Don Bailey had a convincing 26-9 win in their match.

The match finally finished in the home side’s favour when Ken Uglow, Danny Favis, Gordon Wride and Barrie Forse took eight shots to their opponents three in the last five ends to win 20-17 in the fours.

St Andrews played two away Over-60s league games. Against Clevedon they won by 14 shots, taking 14 points to their opponents six and against Victoria, they lost overall by seven shots and took five points to the Victoria’s 15.

St Andrews played two Welsh touring sides and against Mountain Ash, the Saints had a convincing win by 100 shots. The game against BP Llandarcy Neath was a much more competitive game, with the visitors winning by just one shot.

WINSCOMBE enjoyed two further wins in the Weston & District Over-60s League when they beat Portishead RBL by 10 shots and Portishead by 53 shots, keeping their unbeaten record.

The mixed friendly game against Wellington was a close game with the visitors coming out on top winning by five shots.

Only Winscombe B team played in the county league this week against Ashcombe A. After 14 ends, only one Winscombe rink, skipped by Graham Neville, was behind at 10-24.

They came back to lose by just six shots, picking up nine shots in the last three ends, but the captains rink lost eight shots over the last few ends and the match ended with Ashcombe the winners by 12 shots overall.

CLARENCE’S two Somerset County League teams had a successful Saturday, with both winning to maintain their healthy position in their respective tables.

The A team were looking for maximum points at home to Premier 1 bottom team Yeovil B, but had to settle for 10 as captain David Stott’s rink lost by four. Gerald Barlow and his team won by 10 and Richard Crawford’s by 13, which included a seven on the 11th end.

On the other green, Clarence B made it four wins our of four in Division 3 North of the County League – but only just, as they beat visitors Yatton C by a single shot.

Mike Scoins, Mike Skyrme, John Burgess and Chris Read were the match-winners, finishing 11 shots ahead. The rink skipped by John Edwards scored four on the last three ends to draw, so that Clarence earned nine points from the game.

A poor start, in which, collectively, they trailed 8-33 after 10 ends, left Clarence far too much to do in their National Two Fours second-round tie away to local rivals Victoria.

Captain David Stott’s rink fought back well, helped by a six, to be only two behind when the game was conceded with an end to go, but Victoria proved superior overall.

Clarence Blues held a narrow lead after 10 ends of their home Over-60s League match with Portishead RBL. But they fell away to lose by 26 shots.

The home side picked up only three points, through Mick Edlin’s three-shot win and captain David Stott’s draw, which was earned with five shots on the final two ends.

The Golds, Clarence’s second team in the Over-60s League, battled well in their home game against Yatton, before going down by 20 shots. Their only winners were John Kelloway, Fakhri Al-Hinai and skip Ivan Phipps, by seven shots. Mike Davies lost by just one, while John Atkins dropped a three on the last to go down by that margin.

New player Bob Sweet, who has joined Clarence from Clevedon, made a winning debut in the home friendly against Banwell, helping them to a 23-shot victory.

The experienced Sweet played No 3 to club captain David Stott, whose rink finished 11 shots ahead. Chris Read skipped his team to victory by nine, while Mick Edlin’s four came from 3-11 down to win by four.

Community, from Worcester, brought their usual strong line-up to play Clarence’s Sunday mixed team and left with a 29-shot victory after an enjoyable match.

Clarence’s only rink winners were Marysia Angove, Mike and Norma Peters and skip Brendan Duffy. They scored six shots on the last three ends to win by six.

WEDMORE Over-60s men visited Long Ashton for a Clevedon & District triples match and won by 126 shots to 104.

An exceptional performance by Keith Burt and his team with a 33-8 win ensured this good result.

Ashcombe Knights visited Wedmore for an Over-60s triples match, this time in the Weston & District League and Wedmore managed a 102 shot to 88 win after some hard-fought matches.

Congresbury visited Wedmore for the second Clevedon & District Over-60s match with Colin Moss and his team having the best result, winning 22-14.

In the National Two Rink competition, the Wedmore men’s team played away at Sydney Gardens, Bath, winning both rinks and with a total score of 49 to 23. They next play Purnell in the fourth round.

The Wedmore ladies had a week of close results losing by just two, three and four points in their matches.

They lost at Clarence in a WDL match by just two points (49-51), Shirley Wederell and her team had the best result of the day with a 20-14 win.

In another close match, the ladies lost 60-63 away to North Petherton in a WLL match. Maureen Hordle’s team had the only win of the day with a good 27-19 win. Finally, at Mark Moor in another WLL match, they lost by four points 55-59. Marie Trow and her team had the only win of the day 28-11.

Wedmore Bowls Club supported the Bowls Development Alliance at the Bath and West Show and nearly 600 visitors tried their hand at bowls. Vic Matthews and Dave Nicholls, two of the Wedmore promotional team, are pictured at the stand.

ST ANDREWS Ladies lost their third round match in the National Top Club competition, going down 3-1 at home to Congresbury.

Their only success was in the fours with Pat Uglow, Sue Sinclair, Jackie Ware and Ann Campbell winning 22-10.

The Saints ladies had another good win at home in the DRT League, beating Long Ashton by 31 shots and taking all 12 points

WESSEX Ladies recorded wins on all three rinks against Victoria, gaining 10 points.

But in the match versus Clevedon, there was just one winning rink only and the score on another rink was reduced as there was a player short.

Wessex took a day off bowling and had an outing to Exmouth, where a river trip was taken. This was followed by a lunch at Sidford.

The afternoon was spent in Sidmouth. Many visited the beautiful gardens or did some retail therapy. Everyone had an enjoyable day and thanks go to Eileen Wade for the excellent organisation of the trip.

WINSCOMBE Ladies lost by just one shot in a friendly game at Wrington, despite winning two rinks.

In the North Somerset Triples League, Ashcombe were too strong for the Winscombe team and won on all rinks picking up 10 points. Their other friendly with Nailsea also resulted in defeat, despite a good win by Angela Ainsworth’s rink.

VICTORIA Ladies have not enjoyed the best of seasons so far and they lost both matches in the Weston & District Triples League, which included Wessex completing the double.

CLARENCE Ladies notched up their best win of the season so far when they beat Victoria by 23 shots at home in the Weston & District Ladies’ League.

Mary Davison’s Clarence triple won by 16, while Carol Edlin and her team had nine shots to spare.

The ladies found visitors Isle of Wedmore much tougher opposition in the Weston & District League, but finished up on two rinks to win by a couple of shots. Once again, the successful skips were Mary Davison and Carol Edlin.

The ladies made it three Weston & District League victories in a row when they beat Congresbury Ladies by five shots.

Carol Edlin and Pam Barnbrook piled up a final 25-shot advantage on their two triples, which was enough to make up for a heavy defeat on Margaret Noddings’s rink.
