Walton top their group

TABLE TENNIS - WALTON Village are doing well in the Archdale Cup in the Weston and District Table Tennis League, topping Group A after four matches.

WALTON Village are doing well in the Archdale Cup in the Weston and District Table Tennis League, topping Group A after four matches.

Walton's 16-year-old Matthew Fligelstone (8) was the star performer against the experienced Winsc Renegades team, winning all three. Renegades' Paul Hayward (-3), who turned out despite not being well, played well in their second game, almost making up his deficit losing 18-21. Renegades Trevor Jones (1), also playing well, beat Mike Mason (3) and Andrew Paisey (6), both in three. Renegades' other point came from a win by Dave Williams (1) over Paisey. Walton Village won 6-3.

Totterdown Flamingos had the edge over Walton Village in a close 5-4 match. Totterdown started well with Roger Bowden (1) beating Mike Elliott (10) and Nigel Andrews (6) overcoming Matt Fligelstone (8) in three. Andrews also beat Mike Elliott and with his good win over Andy Elliott clinched the match for Flamingos.

In Rookery Manor's match against Flamingos, Rookery's Kiem Mu (8) overcame all the opposition winning all his matches in two straight. Ian Clapp (0) found his handicap a challenge, not able to let a point slip, but came through against Nigel Andrews (6) and Trevor Williams (12) but lost in three to Roger Bowden (10). Rookery won 5-4.

Winsc Rebels v Bleadon Vets B was another match which could have gone to either. Rebels' Rob Hansen (2) came out on top with all his matches in three against both Roger Norvill and Tony Chedgy both 9, and John Pollard (9) in two. Pollard had a good night with wins over Steve Wilcox (4) and Dave Hunt (0) in a close three legs. Rebels go through 5-4.

In Group B, the Cope family of C & C Banwell had a close encounter against Totterdown C which went right to the last match. Martin Cope despite his -3 won all three. Jade Cope (15) won two losing out to Totterdown's Jason King (9). Hannah Cope (15) played well with close sets against King and Gary Chell (5). Banwell won the match 5-4.

Vets A had some tough opposition from C & C Banwell, who fielded two Division 1 players, Bill Atkinson and Martin Cope, both on -3. Vets' Colin Lewis (2) played out of his skin to beat Atkinson. Roger Crump (0) and Ann Sandford (4) both beat Beth Atkinson (15). Beth, who is Bill's daughter, played well to take a leg off Lewis. Banwell won a close match 5-4.

C & C Clevedon, currently topping Group B, had a good win over Totterdown Daemons. James Bessant (13) won three points for Clevedon though needed three games to beat Mike Summers (9) and Jason King (9). King was top scorer for Daemons with winning matches over Clevedon's Callum Parkins (14) and Warren Taylor (14). Daemons' Paul Harding (11) beat Taylor in three. Clevedon won the match 6-3.

In the league, Renegades completed a 10-0 whitewash over Wayfarers. David Williams and Trevor Jones completed their wins without loss. Gary Cattermole needed an extra game against Wayfarers' Richard Parker and Stuart Webb. Phil Yates and Parker put up a good fight in the doubles against Williams and Cattermole.

In Division 2, C & C Banwell's Jade Cope and Martin Cope won their matches, both conceding games on the way. Cobras' Simon Thomas took a leg off Martin Cope and Andrea Monk made it a tight match taking two games from Jade Cope. Hannah Cope had several close games against Thomas Monk and John Barker. Banwell won 21-15.
