Weakened ladies slip up

Injury-hit Weston ladies caught out at Mid-Somerset.

FOLLOWING a long Christmas break, Weston ladies 1st XI began the second half of the season without both centre midfielders, their goalkeeper and a striker.

Nevertheless, Weston arrived at Mid-Somerset with an air of confidence and following an inspirational team talk from stand-in captain Michelle Tuxford, Weston started strongly.

Creative play between the midfield and forwards saw several chances spurned and it seemed only a matter of time before a goal arrived.

However, an unfortunate foot in the defensive D saw a short corner quickly converted by Mid Somerset just before half-time.

A few changes to the formation saw another strong start in the second half and the defensive four of Ness Mawford, Charlotte Gordon, Claire Westgate and Mercedes man of the match centre back Laura Draycott were rock solid.

Unfortunately, the weakened side saw two goals converted in quick succession despite several great saves from stand-in goalkeeper Charli Dale. Lack of fitness saw Weston give way to a youthful Mid-Somerset, who closed the game with a final tap in.

On Saturday, Weston host Taunton Vale 4th XI at Priory School, Worle.
