It was a busy week for Wedmore Golf Club's seniors, with good wins in the Avalon League and a couple of friendlies.

The most important match took place on Tuesday when the seniors faced the club's Ladies in the annual contest for the Friendly Bowl.

The seniors have traditionally done well in this contest but stumbled to defeat in 2021 so were keen to put that right this year.

In the end it was a very close contest with some good scoring from both teams but the seniors just won by 392 points to 388 in a high-scoring contest.

For those not taking part in matches there is always the alternative golf stablefords to play in and there was some good scoring this week.

John Russell continued his purple patch by winning Division One with 38 points, just ahead of Trevor Marshall and Nick Parker on 37.

There was a similar result in Division Two with Paul Mott winning on 38, two ahead of John Vowles and Mike Smith who filled the other two places.

The best scores, though, were in Division Three with Bill Witter winning on countback from Ivor Monelle after both scored 40.

Barry Royal was just a point behind in third as John Sim took top spot in Division Four with 39, two better than Axel Knutson and Terry Williams.

The ladies were back in action on Thursday in the Dickinson Cup qualifier, a county competition for lower handicap players.

Diane Miller was the qualifier from Wedmore this year with a nett 77, which was matched by Ange Webber who lost out on countback with Mandy Vearncombe a shot further back in third.

The best score of the day came in Division Two with Ronnie Follenfant playing two below handicap to win with a nett 70.

Claire Biggs took second place on 75 with Eileen Parnell a shot further back in third.

Karen Clark also scored well, winning Division Three with a nett 72 to see her seven ahead of closest rival Jill Cornelius with Lynda Huzal another shot behind in third place.
