Weston Swimming Club clocked up numerous personal best times at the South West Regional Championships.
Weston swimmers competed with the best from Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall in the South West Regional Youth (age 15+) and Age Group (age 11-14) Championships.
With more Weston swimmers attaining youth qualifying times than in recent years and with the meet being inside the national qualification window, this strong team of talented swimmers were keen to post lifetime best times, to secure a spot inside the top 24 nationally (to qualify for British Championships in July) or top 44 (to qualify for the English Nationals in August).
Day one started well, with new best times from James King, Holly Hudghton, Holly Richards, Evan King, Ruby Soper, Hollie Wilcox and Mason Boobyer.
Qualifying for finals were Holly Hudghton (200m individual medley) and Megan Richards (50m butterfly), with medal winning performances from Immy Moroney (gold - 400m freestyle), Evan King (silver - 400m freestyle), James King (silver - 200m breaststroke), Holly Richards (silver - 50m butterfly) and Evan Brunsdon (bronze - 200m breaststroke).
Bolstered by these results, day two started with a 4x100m medley relay (4.35.33) that would have seen Immy Moroney, Kabria Chapman, Holly Richards and Megan Richards qualify for the final at last year’s English Nationals.
Clocking up personal best times (PBs) were Holly Hudghton, Hollie Wilcox, Ruby Soper, Immy Moroney, Evan Brunsdon, James King, Sophie Langman and Holly Richards.
Flying the flag for Weston in finals were Hollie Wilcox and Evan Brunsdon with podium places earned by James King (gold - 100m breaststroke), Megan Richards (gold - 100m butterfly), Evan King (silver - 200m butterfly and bronze - 100m fly), Holly Hudghton (silver - 200m backstroke), Holly Richards (silver - 100m butterfly) and Immy Moroney (bronze - 200m backstroke)
An additional clutch of PBs were achieved on day three by Holly Hudghton, Immy Moroney, Evan Brunsdon and Sophie Langman. Evan Brunsdon, Sophie Langman, Holly Richards and Megan Richards achieved finals spots, with silverware secured by Immy Moroney (gold – 400m individual medley and silver – 800m freestyle) and Evan King (silver – 200m freestyle).
Following the in the footsteps of their teammates, the club’s 19 younger swimmers achieved a stunning 142 new best times over the four days of competition. Including the 20 finals appearances, 27 top eight places were attained by Farran Gregory (4x4th, 5th, 7th, 8th), Maggie Hammond (4th, 5x6th), Maddy Soper (4 x 7th, 2x8th), Freya King (4th, 6th, 7th, 8th), Bethan Anderson (4th, 7th), Kabria Chapman (7th) and Lillian Arnold (8th).
This continuation in great results is due to the process focused training that the club adopts across its squads.
