Weston Water Polo Club were involved in a 22-goal thriller with Frome which saw both sides share the spoils at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre last Sunday.

The Seasiders, who had been beaten by Frome in an earlier game last month, were without several key players but opened the scoring through Liam Coles.

They held the lead until the final two minutes of the quarter when Frome’s Charlie Hinder grabbed the equaliser.

Welsh international Hinder scored again to give the visitors the lead before Coles levelled the scores.

However, after a tough few minutes trying to hold on Hinder scored his hat-trick to give the visitors a 3-2 lead at the halfway stage.

Mathew Hann and captain Brad Poole scored two quick goals in succession before Weston captain for the night, Reece Trapani led the fightback by grabbing a good goal whilst being heavily marked.

Former Weston player, Martyn Hodges extended Frome’s lead through a penalty awarded against Dean Bird and beat James Bramwell.

Vaughn Clarke pulled one back before Trapani gave away a penalty which saw Poole put the ball into the net.

Trapani got two goals shortly before the end of the period make it 8-6 at the end of the third period.

After a stern talking-to in the interval by Weston coach Nick Purslow, Weston came out for the final quarter fighting, and goals by Trapani and Clarke saw Weston back level.

Frome retook the lead with a goal by Martyn Hodges, and a few seconds later his elder brother Chris moved 10-8 in front.

Matthew Vincent pulled a goal back for the hosts, after being left free upfront with only the keeper to beat, and the brutal attacking of Trapani was rewarded with a well-taken goal, to level once more.

It looked as if Chris Hodges had grabbed the winner for Frome, with just over a minute to go, but Trapani had other ideas have twisted and turned in front of goal and he was finally rewarded with the equaliser with just 11 seconds to go before referee Mike Coles blew the final whistle to end a pulsating match.

Weston continues to try and recruit women for their new women’s team, and there is a good squad of juniors with potential for a forthcoming tournament in November at Plymouth, where Weston are hoping to enter teams.
