Sixteen Weston Athletic Club members finished in the top 40 in the first of the Burnham Winter 5k Road Race Series.

WESTON Athletic Club dominated the results of the first of this season’s Burnham Winter 5k Road Race Series, fielding 16 of the 40 finishers.

The race winner was Keiron Summers in a time of 16.57, the second club member home was Guy Bradford with a time of 18.29 claiming third place in the process, closely followed by Matt Wheeler, who managed a personal best time of 18.35. Female club members Michelle Fryer and Tamara Bourne fought all the way to the finish for second place, Michelle claimed the spot in a time of 22.18, just in front of Tamara, who put in a personal best time of 22.20, Nia Davies was third club female to finish in a time of 23.22.

Tony Hogg, Paul Snelling, Bruce Bourne, Julia Withers, Shaleen Summers and Jill Daughton also produced personal best times over the 5km distance.

It was a busy day for the club with three club championship races to choose from.

The Oldbury Power Station 10 saw the largest field of club members race the fast, flat course around country lanes, finishing back at the power station. Conditions were near perfect, and the club’s members seized the opportunity to put their summer training into effect.

The fastest three men repeated the finishing order of the Burnham 5km. Keiron Summers was in top form once again, comfortably taking second place and winning his age category in 57.29, followed by Guy Bradford in 1.01.55 and Matt Wheeler in 1.05.21, all three were personal bests.

Geraldine Hope took first club female in 1.21.18, Nia Davies was second in 1.22.51 and Helen Diamond put in a personal best performance of 1.23.25 to claim third.

Stuart Diamond, Jo Coveney and Shaleen Summers also achieved a personal best and John Hinchliffe was the second club member to win their age category.

Also in the road championship was the Burnham Half Marathon, Jim Hayward was first club member to finish in 1.35.53 and Alan Johnstone was second in 2.00.53.

The Portishead multi-terrain 10k was the target for runners competing on the club’s off-road championship. Andy Chadburn was first member in 42.51 and Tony Hogg was second in 44.53, moving him into second in the championship and setting up an interesting final three championship races.

Sunday also saw the return of the Weston Sprint Triathlon involving a 450m open-water swim in Marine Lake, a 20k cycle over three laps of the undulating and scenic coast road to Kewstoke and a 5k run along the town’s golden sand.

Nine of the club’s triathletes took the opportunity to compete on home turf, Phil Tomlinson took the first club place in a time of 1.01.12, followed by Andy Hayes in 1.06.29 and Simon Andrews in 1.06.48. Vanessa Andrews was first club female in 1.27.19.

Entries are due to sell out for the 28th Christmas Cracker 10k and the all new mini Cracker 2k for ages seven to 15 years, both on Weston seafront on December 6. Enter now for some fancy-dress festive fun.
